Il était une fois, à Moscou et à Saint-Pétersbourg, une femme mythique nommée Mari Vanna qui accueilli ses convives à bras ouverts dans sa maison et leur fit goûter une cuisine russe traditionnelle à sa table ornée de sa plus belle porcelaine ainsi que de son linge de maison le plus fin. Tout le monde était bienvenu. Certains eurent même l'honneur de recevoir une clé pour pouvoir revenir lorsque bon leur semblait. Aujourd'hui, le restaurant Mari Vanna vous accueille à New York, dans un pâté de maisons populaire entre les quartiers de Flatiron et de Gramercy. Il y attend les New-Yorkais, les voisins ainsi que les touristes qui cherchent un endroit pour se restaurer, boire et passer un bon moment, tout en découvrant la véritable hospitalité russe. Le menu comprend des classiques russes intemporels tels que la délicieuse soupe Borsch composée de pampushkas, de betterave, de bouillon, de viande de bœuf, de carottes ainsi que de pommes de terre, servie avec une crème aigre dans une belle soupière assez grande pour vous resservir à loisir. Le Mari Vanna est ouvert pour le dîner, le brunch et le souper, 7 jours par semaine.

Let's start with the very important... the FOOD (we ate) IS GREAT. We went with friends and among us we had borscht, mushroom soup, pirozhki, vareniki, chicken kiev, chocolate kolbasa and medovik; and the bread that's served to each table. Obviously I can only opine on those items. All of the items were excellent. I did find the vareniki a little bland, at least compared with how I make it, but not compared with other restaurants. The appetizer size was sufficient for me as an entre, especially with the really chock-full of veggies and beef borscht. Oh and the 3 pieces of wonderful dark, thick raisin bread I had first. My husband and cousin couldn't finish their chicken Kiev and mashed potatoes, and my husband is a big eater. The service was polite and relatively prompt for a very busy Saturday night. The one down-side was that the music is loud. But not so much that we couldn't talk across a good-sized table. Mari Vanna has now become our go-to Russian restaurant for any future visits to NYC, and I recommend it to anyone who is either interested in Russian food, or would like to try it.

Read about Mari Vanna in Forbes and came here based on their review. Abundant choices on menu. Authentically Russian. Decor and ambience set a great tone. I'm not an adventurous diner so this would not normally be in my wheel house. Menu choices were fantastic and drinks were an homage to Eastern Europe. Lots of Russian spoken at tables around us only added to a great evening. Unhurried yet attentive. Very pleased.

This is not my first time at MariVanna, and let me tell you : the prices doubled ( If not tripled since few months ago!). And it’s not like the amount of food on the plate increased ( decreased if any). The food was good, but c’mon .. $19 for a small bowl on Vinigret? , $22 of a small plate of pelmeni? $33 for 2!!!!!! Stuffed cabbage rolls ?! For those who can make the same food at home , we all know , it is a total rip off ! But hey , why don’t we get with the program and charge customers astronomical prices juts because it’s inflation and everyone is doing it ?! Right ?! The only item on a menu that seemed to match the price was Napoleon , $17 . At lease the piece was large and shareable . If that’s the prices today, I can only imagine the prices when the “ congestion “ fee will go in effect. Good luck to us all! But I will think twice before coming back and paying and arm and a leg for an ordinary “ home cooked “ dinner . Otherwise , the staff was pleasant , the ambiance is adorable and the service was prompt . No complains there

Mari Vanna is a very pretty restaurant . The food was very good. We particularly enjoyed the appetizers. The meat dumplings and the potato perogies were outstanding. What we did not care for was the very loud and annoying music that had nothing to do with it being a Russian restaurant . I had specified that this was a very special occasion and would appreciate that taken in in consideration when seating us . It was a lovely table and very comfortable , but there wasn’t any acknowledgment that this was a celebration of a very special birthday. I must say that I was disappointed in this fact, acknowledgment, and perhaps a special dessert for the birthday girl would have been appreciated. We will most likely return because the food was very good.

Kiev chicken was super dry and completely tasteless … and the same abt dessert:( Coming from California Bay Area, not impressive Culinary experience ! But super nice service and ambience… I would not spend my money and time for lunch or dinner but coffee, tea

We were there for Sunday brunch but when we got there and sat down to order were told no brunch menu is available because the computer is down. It took forever to get served. The waiter was super busy and looked like had more tables than he could handle

The food we ordered were all delicious, nicely presented and served on the table in good time. The waiter was soli cities to our needs. We’ll surely come back to explore more of their menus and drinks! Definitely, we’ll recommend to our friends and business associates.

There are probably servers working at this restaurant but much like a leprechaun you will only see one if you're very lucky and pure of heart and mind. Food was excellent. Dining experience was only slightly undercut by the very slow service but was significantly undercut by the three (3) tables of increasingly loud/drunk men who were dining with, uh, what your grandmother might call a "paid companion". Table manners may differ but personally, I find it poor form to lick your diner date's forehead/face while in a public space. Also, loudly yelling at your date across the table that she's a nice, feminine woman and you're going to go to her house so she can make you some borsch is rude to the rest of us who are not invited for borsch. I assume the servers would have done something about this but since these diners were, as mentioned, not pure of heart and mind, they were nowhere to be found. 4/10 for experience, 9/10 for food - the potato vareniki are great and the cheese pie with a side of the sauteed mushrooms is perfect.

The food overall was good. Service was a little slow and brusque. Atmosphere was nice but very loud Russian pop music didn't fit the vibe. They have a nice Russian birthday song but the desserts are so expensive - none less than $17

Food was excellent like always - just a little disappointed how fast the food comes, when I explicitly asked them to spread the dishes out. Within 5 minutes of ordering, every single appetizer was on the table, before the drinks even came out...We came to Mari Vanna to celebrate a special occasion and it just felt very rushed from the second we got there. We were forced to eat immediately because we did not want the food to get cold. Then, we were not even half way done with the apps but all of the main courses came out....we didn't even have space on our table for them. I don't understand why it was so poorly timed but we had to stop eating our apps and switch over to main courses, which was not a great experience. Felt very rushed overall. Food was good though.

Russian food how my grandma made it and how I make it at home! Delicious. Everything we ordered - and we ordered pretty much everything - was very authentic and very tasty. We brought some American and even some Chinese friends with us and they all loved it too. Can't wait to come back and hope the one in DC reopens!

Lovely, authentic, and comforting Russian food, approved by a Russian American. We will definitely go back. My parents who aren’t the biggest New York fans also loved it and said they want to come back the next time they’re visiting me!

I gave the food a 4 rating perhaps largely due to personal taste issues. Others liked their food. I found my Olivier salad to be a bit salty and oniony and "less smooth" than others I've had. My stuffed cabbage was served in a salty broth - unexpected and not to my taste. So, I need to try other foods to be fair. My Onegin dessert had a very good custard - better than most places. As for service, competent and friendly, but could have come by to refill water glasses. We came at 7 PM and it was reasonably quiet, but shortly after 8 became noisy and very noisy when we left about 9. For those who like alcohol, they have a wide variety of vodkas - plain and flavored and some interesting cocktails.

Used to love the restaurant, but this time it was average. The duck was burned, like charcoal black..We had 3 birthdays at our table and after mentioning it to our waiter, we did not get the song.

Food and service are excellent. The ambiance is warm and inviting- like a Grandma's house in the country- lace curtains and all.
