Le Colonial is a celebration of seductive spirit and vivid flavors reminiscent of Saigon in the 1920s. With locations in Chicago, Houston, Atlanta, Delray Beach (2023) and Lake Forest (July 2022), the famed Vietnamese restaurant is designed to capture a bygone era of sophistication and opulence. Heralded as "an escapist’s paradise," celebrated restaurateurs Rick Wahlstedt and Joe King deliver on exquisite attention to detail in a luxurious classic and romantic atmosphere in the iconic Market Square of Lake Forest. Please be advised that we do not hold an indoor reservation for all patio reservations. We cannot guarantee a table inside if you wish to move.

This restaurant deserves 5 stars. The food is fresh & delicious. The ambiance is amazing. Their outdoor patio is gorgeous. The staff is top notch & everyone is warm & friendly. I felt like I was on vacation dining there. My husband & I will definitely be back.

Our meal was outstanding!! The small bites we ordered let us share and taste the wonderful textures and sauces. Our main courses were also wonderful. Will definitely return.

A very beautiful place with great food. We had the shrimp and pork rolls which were amazing and their signature dish, the crispy snapper. Food was delicious, however, they need to work with the staff on how to filet the fish better as there were a lot of bones left. Drinks were very pricey, with a glass of wine being $24.

We have been to this restaurant several times. Mother's Day, we were seated promptly at 5 pm for a table of 5 and proceeded to enjoy a wonderful meal. Multiple servers were prompt and courteous. Everything from small sides to main courses to desserts were excellent. Their cocktails are unique and colorful. A very good experience.

Second time dissatisfied. This time we had flies buzzing around our food and table, on our Mother’s Day outing! Very disappointing. We had to leave early so disgusted, and the staff didn’t respond. May not return. The food is excellent but this experience and past service unacceptable. .

Our first time and will return again soon. The appetizers and entrees were inventive, beautifully presented and absolutely superb, the artwork and decoration sets an elegant tone, yet bright and very comfortable in the dining room. There is also a lovely terrace to dine outside. Service was very helpful, pleasant and attentive. Prices are fair value for such high quality fare and its location. Definitely worth a visit!

Beautiful restaurant. Extremely packed. Seating was uncomfortable. Buss boys took away plates and utensils as soon as you took your last bite. Had a buss boy drop a dish right behind me that broke on my chair and didn’t apologize or ask if I was ok… strange manners for a 4.8 star restaurant. Appetizers were fantastic, we got the snapper for our meal and were less than impressed tons of bones, lack of flavor and creativity. Also went home hungry. This was our second chance for Le Colonial -we won’t be returning.

The food last night was so good. We had three small plates and then two entrées. cocktails were excellent too, and we had a bottle of French wine. I think the Lake Forest one is even better than the city one.

The service was horrible, they rushed us true dinner and asked to take care of the bill as soon as the desert was ordered. We have not even tried it yet. They ruined mother’s day dinner. Never again!

Table too close, especially against the wall. You can hear other people conversations. Food could have been put on a table separately. Salads and main course were served at the same time. It was no place to put the food and drinks on a table. By the time we ate salads, main course was cold. It was some frustration and uncomfort.

Tables were way to close together. The table itself is very small and with the flower and lamp on it there’s barely any room left for the food, especially if you’re ordering multiple appetizers to share.

Everything we expected and more! One downfall is the room we sat in, right next to the main dining room, once this area filled up, the conversations from the room were extremely loud.

Our guests described it as”just perfect.” We started with a round of beautifully prepared drinks, including one mocktail. The color of the gimlet provides its own reason for ordering. It literally matches the color of the vase on the table and it was tasty as well as beautiful. We followed with appetizers and mains, with sides of garlic green beans and garlic noodles for the table. Our gluten free guest felt he had good choices. A lovely night out, with attentive and polite service, from the gentleman who poured water, the bus man who cleared our plates to the vigilant server.

Delicious food and cocktails. Highlights included the smoked old fashioned and Le Colonial signature cocktails, the pork spare ribs, fried rice, shaking beef, and tapioca pudding. Service was friendly but all of our shared entrees came out at once rather than being paced out, as we had asked. And while the ambiance is great, the main dining room has too many tables in it and the volume was so loud in the middle of the room we had to shout to have a conversation.

We sat in the bar. Very nice decor and atmosphere. Service was excellent. The cocktails were on point and enjoyable. The food service was also efficient and portions reasonable for the prices. As for food quality, I’d say excellent presentation (very consistent with other reviews). I would also consider this to be somewhat Asian fusion, with decent results. We enjoyed the ceviche and dumplings the most, beat salad the least. Plenty of parking across the street.

Must have been an off night but arrived on time but whole party hadn’t arrived so they wouldn’t seat us. Ordered drinks at the bar. 2 out of 3 arrived when our table was ready. We were seated at a very small 3 top for 4 of us with a chair added to a booth. One person ended up sitting in the aisle of the main dining room The table was much too small for 4 people. Multiple people asked us for our drink order and we still had to keep asking for our paid drink from the bar and our water to be served. Once Jonathan took over everything was fantastic. A bit disappointed that our birthday celebration was never acknowledged nor did they ask for any allergies prior to ordering our meals.

We deviated from our normal meal of Salmon and added the following. Although my middle had it. Perfectly cooked to medium rare. The duck was very tasty and presentation was spectacular! We eat with our eyes and Le Colonial has this down to a science. Very inventive. The filet mignon was served as small bites accompanied by a salad. It was perfectly cooked at medium rare. We finished with the chocolate lava cake and crème brûlée. The perfect finish! We will definitely be back!

If you are looking for beautifully crafted food, Le Colonial lived up to expectations. If you expect service to be at the same level, you may be disappointed. After being seated for lunch we waited 15 minutes before anyone came to the table to offer a greeting and water, luckily we were a party of 3 with some catching up to do. Would have appreciated recommendations on sizing as we order far too much food, the leftovers are certainly lovely. The biggest kicker was one of the main dish orders not actually being placed and when the situation was being rectified and the plate came after the other had finished their meals there wasn’t an acknowledgement or apology. We left a 25% tip as my husband was in the service industry himself and will not return.

I have been to this restaurant a few times and truly love the ambiance, food and service. I know there is a time limit on dining spelled out when you make a reservation. However, this can take away from a wonderful dining experience. We were celebrating the 80th birthday of a friend and were reminded several times that we would need to give up our table after 2 hours. I first want to say that our server was wonderful and I believe he was as uncomfortable reminding us as we were receiving the messages. I felt very rushed to order, especially at the end only having 5 minutes to eat our dessert. I know a business is about making money, but this should not trump the customers dining experience.
