Le Central a ouvert ses portes en 1974 et se présente comme l'un des derniers vestiges de la vieille ville de San Francisco. I’ve been going to LeCentral on and off for more than 30 years, but it seems not up to the level of where it was as recently as my last pre-Covid visits. They no longer have their steak au poivre on the menu, and the steak frites was hugely disappointing. What had been a reliable mainstay of the menu now features a poor cut of hanger steak that was so tough that I ate a few bites before pushing it aside and turning to the still excellent frites. My wife’s mussels were good, as was my butter lettuce salad. But considering the cost, the value simply wasn’t there. It’s been better in the past, and my hope is that it will be again in the future.

A charming little French restaurant near the French church in Downtown San Francisco. Classic French dishes and a favorite lunch spot of locals. Bastille Day is an annual event with music all day. It’s usually sold out. It has a nice bar and friendly staff.

A classic San Francisco restaurant. I hadn't been there since before the Pandemic and it was great to see that the it was pretty much the same old self than before. Very reliable, old fashioned with great service. I always feel that they have a lot of repeat customers that are coming there again and again. A great place also for business lunches.

We enjoyed a wonderful dinner here a few days ago. (Mondays are half off wine by the bottle, a good chance to try something new.)The pâté appetizer is a truly authentic version, served with toast & cornichon. Main courses were beef bourguignon (excellent) and steak frites (deliciously traditional). Service was perfect, attentive without being intrusive. We look forward to a return visit.

We are here many times food was excellent however this time the steak was very tough as if not trimmed . I did not eat my steak

Our finished entrees plates were left on the table for a long time, servers bring plates to other customers, should have taken our plates on way back to kitchen. Even if dessert seemed backed up, rather have a clean table while waiting. Took almost 20 minutes to get our desserts. Mousse and crème brûlée …. Those should be done way ahead of time.

I’m a regular visitor to SF and this is the first time at this restaurant. If you want traditional French this is the place. The Cassoulet was outstanding and the service was impeccable. Our waitress recommended an outstanding and reasonably priced wine. I’ll be back,

Very disappointed with the food. Service was ok except they had a tip included and then lied and told us it was a tax.

We are sorry you were disappointed with your experience. What you are referring to is the 5% surcharge for SF employer mandates which include Healthy SF a city mandated ordinance that allows for small business employees to have healthcare reimbursed from the city the money we collect goes into their personal city managed accounts so if they go to the doctor or God forbid have a serious medical emergency that money goes to help pay their medical bills. This is not a TAX or a TIP, I'm sorry if someone told you it was a tax, but we certainly didn't "LIE" about it NOT being a TIP. THIS IS NOT PART OF THEIR TIP NOR DOES THE RESTAURANT THE FUNDS! most restaurants in the city charge 4% - 7% of the bill for this. This has been common practice since the ordinance was created more than 15 yrs ago

Great service and wonderful food. We dine here every time we are in The City and are never disappointed. The menu is excellent! Oysters, beet Napoleon, and onion soup! just wow! thanks for a truly perfect SF/Paris experience.

We got a reservation at the last moment, so were surprised. We got a great table in the bar area, which was our choice, loved the ambience. The French Onion soup was fantastic as was the Steak Frites. They were good size portions, excellent value.

The food was quite good, if not excellent. The service was slow and inattentive. It was almost like we were purposefully being ignored, though I don't actually think that was the case--it just feels that way when the waiter walks by your table so many times without so much as acknowledging that you're there and have been waiting a long time to place your order.

Loved our movie group lunch here! We ordered several plates to share. Loved the bread and butter and fries. Deviled eggs. Salads were very fresh but could've used a little punch of flavor. Cocktails were stellar.

We were unaware that there was a prix fix menu for Valentine’s Day. Open Table listing didn’t show it. Diners on both side of us left after being seated and finding out dinner was so expensive. Dinner was fine (except for profiteroles; tasted like the freezer).

We are so sorry about the confusion, I'm not sure why open table had our regular menu listed that night as we set up (or at least thought we had set up) that as a special day. Profiterols are made in house and never frozen, however the ice cream is kept in the freezer so we will check that, thanks for your feed back, it is important to us.

The food (celery root salad, steak frites and roasted brussel sprouts) was excellent. However, there was initial confusion among the staff about who was responsible for our table, which resulted in quite a delay. However, the biggest problem was the noise level. There was an out of control party of 8+ in back of us and the noise level make it virtually impossible to converse. We literally had to use hand signals and lip reading to have a minimal conversation.

We are aware that it gets very loud when the dining room is full, especially with a party of 19 and we are looking into some options for noise treatment. I wish you had said something so we could have tried to relocate you in the bar side of the restaurant. We do hope you will give Le Central another chance.

Le Central has been my favorite for years. I worked around the corner in the 80’s and 90’s and had many lunches sitting next to boys of San Francisco. IYKYK. Everything was nice. The food was almost perfect. I had the Frisée Aux Lardons. It was made with bacon and not lardons. Big difference. The Cassoulet was awesome. The Duck was a little dry. I suspect it did not cook immersed in the actual Cassoulet. The Mousse au Chocolat was perfect. Waiter excellent. Wine was very good. Quite place.

Long standing semi-traditional French SF restaurant doesn’t have much going for it food and value wise. Average glass of wine is about $20. Food is good but not great. We had dinner in the barroom while the dining room was completely vacant. Adequate if you’re in the neighborhood, but definitely not a destination. An unfortunate contributor to SF s continued decline. Sadly, they are not alone.

Escargo needs to use butter not oil. Even they charge bread…… Should be bread service is free if you order a lot of food. Service is poor After they serve the dessert and we are still eating server bring the check to our table to left. Sauce is good taste but meat is just ok kind over cooking ( i order lamb and cook request was MR)

Delicious food but very disappointing and poor service. Felt like we had been forgotten - The staff realized when no drinks order but the service didnt improve throughout the meal. A bit of a shame as nice restaurant and great food
