Le Central a ouvert ses portes en 1974 et se présente comme l'un des derniers vestiges de la vieille ville de San Francisco. Ancrée dans des valeurs traditionnelles, Le Central fête ses plus de quarante ans au service de clients nourris et satisfaits. Amazing ambience, service, and food. It will transport you to Paris. Try the cassoulet and sole. Delicious.

Food was very good. I found the restaurant lacking atmosphere, possibly because it wasn’t busy but some music would have been good.

Thanks for your honest review, we certainly don't strive for 3 star reviews. We're glad you liked the food at least. Not sure why there was no music as we usually have very nice french music playing. Possibly it wasn't loud enough or our Sonos system went off (as it sometimes does) and no one noticed. Unfortunately busy is something hit or miss in this part of town in this post pandemic era. Hopefully you return and find the ambiance better as it is usually very quaint. Thank you for dining with us and sharing your review.

The prices for bubbles was very high, and generally the glasses of wine. I think some good French wines for less would be nice to have on the menu. The beef bougignoine was exceptional. The staff were very attentive and provided good service. The ambience was a casual french style bistro- not too crowded for a Wed night so the noise level was very low ( and perfect for converstaions)

Gerri, thank you so much for the kind review. We are glad you enjoyed Le Central. As for the wine, we like to offer high quality wines that are marked up less than average rather than inexpensive wines marked up higher. We also try to offer a range from the affordable $14 or $15/ glass all the way up to some premium high end $30 - $40/ glass Coravin Pours. As we only serve French and California wines, a $12 glass of Prosecco or Cava is unfortunately not an option for bubbles and finding a Champagne of any quality in that range is virtually impossible, although we usually have a Cremant of some sort for between $14 and $18 but at the moment do not. We change our By The Glass pours very often so sometimes we have more wines in the $14-$16 range other times we have more of the $17-$21 range.

I’ve been going to LeCentral on and off for more than 30 years, but it seems not up to the level of where it was as recently as my last pre-Covid visits. They no longer have their steak au poivre on the menu, and the steak frites was hugely disappointing. What had been a reliable mainstay of the menu now features a poor cut of hanger steak that was so tough that I ate a few bites before pushing it aside and turning to the still excellent frites. My wife’s mussels were good, as was my butter lettuce salad. But considering the cost, the value simply wasn’t there. It’s been better in the past, and my hope is that it will be again in the future.

Hi John, Thanks for your honest review. We do the Filet au-Poivre regularly as a special, and are considering putting it back on the menu, but with inflation and costs of meat the way they are we wanted to offer a more cost friendly option that aligned with our current price point. We hope you will dine with us again, and you can always give the restaurant a call and see if we are offering the filet that evening.

A charming little French restaurant near the French church in Downtown San Francisco. Classic French dishes and a favorite lunch spot of locals. Bastille Day is an annual event with music all day. It’s usually sold out. It has a nice bar and friendly staff.

A classic San Francisco restaurant. I hadn't been there since before the Pandemic and it was great to see that the it was pretty much the same old self than before. Very reliable, old fashioned with great service. I always feel that they have a lot of repeat customers that are coming there again and again. A great place also for business lunches.
