Great destination for incredible Indian food. The night we were there it was a holiday and quiet. Can't wait to go back.

Excellent and unusual food. Fish in fish curry was perfectly cooked: not at all overcooked, as is usually the case in Indian (and other!) fish dishes. Breads were also great: peshwari naan, not all that common on local menus, especially good. Service was fine also. Only complaint is that the tables (at least in the patio area) are too small to accommodate an Indian meal.

Sat us in a crowded back porch not in he pretty inside portion pictured on their website, which was mostly empty. The service was efficient but unfriendly. The food was good but very run of the mill Indian. The portions were small. One member of our party was served a Mango Lassi in a plastic cup with a straw. I can't say I would recommend it

So, last night marked our inaugural visit to Laila's. We had a reservation for 5 pm and showed up punctually. The place was eerily quiet – staff aplenty but no other souls dining besides us. We ordered unsweetened tea, but our server insisted we try their chai tea instead. Reluctantly, we obliged, only to find it utterly bland. When we asked for garlic naan, we were told to wait until our main course. Starting to feel irked, we just wanted to place our order without the unsolicited advice. But things took a turn for the absurd when, after waiting for what felt like an eternity, a man burst out of the kitchen yelling about a gas leak and demanding we evacuate. Gathering our wits and belongings, we made our way outside, followed by our persistent waiter, who suggested we dine alfresco while he miraculously conjured up our meal despite the gas emergency. Needless to say, we declined the offer. I mean, really? Freshly cooked food during a gas leak? We're not buying it! Within minutes, the block was swarmed by emergency responders. Talk about a dining experience gone awry – dodging potential gas poisoning or worse, an explosion! Regardless of how fancy the decor may be, rude staff, lackluster chai, and questionable freshness of the food are major deal-breakers. Zero stars? I'd say that's being generous!

The food here is just lovely. Fresh, beautifully prepared and authentic. It’s just a treat to taste so many delicious, unique flavors and combinations that are outside of the mainstream, predictable, Americanized menus. Their little “outside” patio is weather enclosed and cozy and full of natural light. I’m looking forward to eating out there again when the weather is warmer and it’s all opened up as well. Laila is just a sweet little gem in the midst of downtown AVL.
