Opened in 2016, this Uptown Mexican eatery continues to gather accolades, including a spot on The New York Times' recommendations "36 hours in Chicago" and four straight years of being a MICHELIN Guide Bib Gourmand restaurant right up to the present.

An immersive experience of Oaxacan cuisine featuring layudas (a.k.a. Mexican pizza), tamales oaxaqueños, enchiladas de mole, cornish hen and tacos de birria just to name a few. Their selection of margaritas made with homemade agua frescas with no artificial syrups and mimosas on the weekends is a must! Diners know to leave room too for the Oaxacan nicuatole (a flavored flan) and tres leches cake.

Kie-Gol-Lanee comes from the Zapotec dialect meaning "Piedra Antigua" (old stone). Its Spanish version "Quiegolani" is the name of a small village in Oaxaca, Mexico, where the owners and siblings are from. Maria and Reynel Mendoza run this operation with their spouses, Leo and Sandra, whose mission is to preserve their family’s original recipes.

    It’s a safe bet for Oaxacan food. Nice neighborhood restaurant, but far from an amazing culinary experience. Good service and low-key ambiance.

    Kie-gol-Lanee definitely earns their Michelin rating. The service and food were outstanding. I live in the neighborhood so the location is very convenient. However street parking on Sheridan is not a problem if you are driving. It's a short walk east from the Red Line Argyle station. We had an early reservation for a Monday evening, and were seated right away. Soon after the restaurant started to fill up with most parties having a reservation. Service starts with complimentary refried black beans and chips. We ordered margaritas with our apps: tylacoyos de frijoles and puerco en mole verde tamale. Both appetizers were excellent. I liked the bright flavors of the cactus and radish in the tylacoyos. For the main I ordered the Gallinitas al Horno. The mole was delicious, thought maybe a little salty. I paired that with one of their Mezcal's. I recommend Kie-Gol-Lanee. It's worth a trip to Uptown.

    Everything we tried was absolutely amazing. I think both the green and red tamales as well as the Tres leches cake were showstoppers above and beyond the other fantastic things we ate. There was also a special of pork ribs in a peanut sauce that can only be described as “I had no idea something could taste like this, Yum Yum” You definitely need a reservation because the place is small. The strawberry guava margarita was wonderful and I had one with mezcal from their hometown and one with tequila. Both were delicious.

    The food was delicious! It was crowded on Mother’s Day, but the noise level was mid level where you could have a nice conversation with everyone around the table. All staff was friendly and welcoming. I would highly recommend, you try this place.

    The music was too loud for us to enjoy our conversation. It felt like being in a club but full of families celebrating Mother's Day. Pretty good food. Excellent service. Mismatched vibes.

    Unbelievable value for the money. One of the best Mexican restaurants in Chicago, and one of the few Oaxacan. Not hard to believe they've win a Michelin award.
