Karkalla reflects the essence we believe to be truly Australian- coastal, sun kissed, relaxed, and most importantly generous.

We are known and loved for our relaxed, welcoming atmosphere, use of native indigenous ingredients and love of locally sourced seasonal produce.

Our signature dishes include Native Green Curry, Sashimi with Native Nam Jim and Kangaroo Curry Pie.

Jingiwallah - hello and welcome locals, travellers, families, and friends alike. At Karkalla we keep half of our tables for walk-ins so please stop by if you can not get a booking.

If you get a chance to eat here while it’s still open. Take it! The service was exceptional, the food was out of this world. I’m so privileged to have had this experience.

We did love the food but unfortunately too noisy for us. We go usually to eat out in town to this places with friends and we like to talk. If we go alone we go to more casual places like, let’s say Japanese kitchen, for a quick bite. But with friends is nice to have a more fine and long dining experience as it means most of the times we are catching up, but as I mentioned, it was so difficult to talk. We were not so fortunate because our table was the closest to the speaker. Food was wonderful, and the staff were lovely, a pity about the noise.

Fantastic experience! Food, drinks, service and location at Karkalla are delightful. Things that cannot be missed: prawns, scallops, Bunya nut bread and green curry. This first nation restaurant is unique, it invited me to connect with local nature and Bundjalung culture. Flavours I'd never had before, natives I didn't know that existed, stories about Bundjalung traditions that opened my senses. I'll definitely be back. Thank you Karkalla!

We visited the place for the first time while on holidays in Byron- the food was super fresh, garnished with native herbs and flowers which made it more interesting and very palatable. Its on a pricey side but at least you get what you paid for! Native Margarita was absolutely delicious! We tried multiple small seafood dishes plus a main with a couple of drinks- the bill amounted to 220 dollars for 2. Highly recommended if you are a bit of a foodie.

Amazing tastes showcasing the diversity of Australian native food in a creative and top-notch dining experience. From the moment we stepped into Kirkala, we were greeted with warm hospitality and an inviting atmosphere. The menu is a delightful exploration of native Australian ingredients, expertly crafted into dishes that are both innovative and delicious. Each bite was a revelation, with flavors that danced on the palate and showcased the richness of our local cuisine. Standout dishes included the king fish sushimi and the beetle nut leaf mushroom wrap, both expertly prepared and bursting with flavor. The presentation of each dish was a work of art, highlighting the chef's attention to detail and commitment to excellence. The service was warm and friendly, with attentive staff who were knowledgeable about the menu and happy to offer recommendations. Overall, Kirkala is a gem of a restaurant that celebrates the best of Australian cuisine in a truly memorable dining experience.

I loved eating at Karkalla. The food was delicious, the service was friendly and I will definitely go back there again as well as recommend it to others. The combination of native Australian flavours and foods combined with more traditional foods made for a sumptuous dining experience. The bunya nut bread with mushrooms was to die for! Highly recommended!

Eh. I had high hopes for Karkalla. We had 7 dishes and 4 were very below par. The betel leaf beef was amazing, as was the damper and scallops. The oyster were really odd, the lime sorbet was jarring and tasted like dishwashing soap, the prawns had not been deveined and I cannot say this is ok, if that is how someone likes their prawns that’s fine, but it is not for everyone, and does change the flavour of the dish. The potatoes were completely unseasoned and were like eating paper, served with very underwhelming kangaroo.

I give this restaurant a 20 out of 10! The food is so divine we keep coming back for more! My favourite is the sashimi with Nam Jim crisp!

A really enjoyable dining experience. The staff are attentive, but relaxed, and the décor really beautiful. I learnt that the restaurant is owned by chef and restaurateur Mindy Woods. She brings her Aboriginal heritage to create a wonderfully tasty and creative menu featuring locally sourced, seasonal produce with native indigenous ingredients. The best dining experience I had on this trip to Byron Bay.

Amazing food, done with an indigenous style.Everything we had was full of flavour. All staff were friendly and efficient and took the time to talk and get to know you. Definitely recommend as one of the best restaurants in Byron

Such a fabulous overall experience. Delicious food, unique flavours, all beautifully presented. Sophisticated but not fussy. The staff are friendly, professional and the atmosphere earthy yet refined. Nothing was too much trouble. Will be back!

The menu is seasonal which makes different dining experiences unique. Such a beautiful, earthy, intimate restaurant serving the most delightful and creative dishes all from our indigenous land. The waitresses are so excited to be there too explaining different dishes and ingredients. The kangaroo with its own smoking was fantastic as was the green fish curry and the mushroom taco. The mango and macadamia salad just delicious. The drinks are always yummy. Altogether a delightful and soulful dining wonder!

Fantastic flavours and great customer service. The food experience was superb with staff knowledge and professionalism great. The menu we found to be hard to follow (the 100 dollar taste menu). Cannot fault the culinary skills as each piece was well presented and taste awesome. My son had his 19 and was welcomed .

Fantastic concept and food, all executed really well. Beautifully cooked dishes using local and Australian native produce. Very impressed at the quality of food produced by a relatively small kitchen team. Been twice, both great experiences. A must if you are in Byron for a few days.

We always come back to Karkalla when we’re in Byron. Amazing food. So full of flavour in every single dish. You cannot go wrong with any item on the menu. We tried the deep ocean oysters as well as having the scallops, prawns and seafood curry. All of them were divine! Cocktails are great too.
