Plastic straws?! Really?! Not even asked. They serve drinks with plastic straws. Terrible. No clear explanation of how dish is cooked (seared, saute, etc). No clear information of what comes with dish. Rice? Bread? Ahí was flavorless on a bed of cooked cabbage. Cabbage was overpowering and again, we didn't expect it was going to be part of the dish. Flatbread chickpea dish was weirdly flavored. Didn't like it. And again was surprised that it came with white rice. Too many unfortunate surprises. Won't return to this restaurant.

I seldom write reviews, especially poor ones, but, unfortunately, the Jack O'Neil did not live up to its rating. First, the setting is quite nice overlooking the ocean. The service was good. My wife was happy with the rib eye steak. I ordered the seared scallops, which were cooked quite nicely. However, the vegetables underneath the scallops were lukewarm, with the carrot pate, beans and peas cold, either under cooked, or not completely thawed out. In addition, the vegetables added no flavor to the dish. I sent the dish back to be warmed, which made it edible, but certainly not memorable for a dish costing nearly $50. If I pay a tab for two of $200 including tip, I expect considerably better than this.

Our experience at Jack O'Neil's was 10 out of 10. The service was outstanding, the views incredible, and our food was amazing. I brought my mother-in-law for lunch, and she could not say enough great things about the choices on the menu, location, and our sitting area (every table there has a wonderful view of the ocean). She loved that the restaurant felt lively but with great acoustics so we could hear each other. Jack O'Neil restaurant is living up to everything you'd want for an oceanfront, upscale restaurant. I highly recommend it.

I booked Jack O’Neal for my wife’s birthday and boy. Was that a mistake. It started off with them being confused about a reservation, but that was resolved relatively quickly and not a big deal. We were sat at a booth that had a good view of the restaurant and the ocean behind it, then we got drinks and the menu. It took forever for the drinks to arrive. The menu was very expensive which I guess they’re charging for the view? Because the food did not live up to the hype I ordered the short ribs which came way overcooked and I had to send back, the service was extremely slow. They forgot my wife’s drink a couple of times and then they didn’t have the ingredients and so they substituted with a different drink. It’s obvious that this is a hotel restaurant and not a premium restaurant that can stand on its own.

This is a lovely location facing the beach and the staff accommodated us with a great table. Prices are high $50+ for scallops and serving them on lentils, although I was willing to go with the chef's idea and try it, was not a good combination.

Our server Sarah was lovely. We arrived about 30 minutes early and were seated after a short wait. The bar got busy so our drinks were delayed but overall, a great experience!

The food was amazing and so was the service and ambiance. Our server, Josh, was very knowledgeable about the entire menu and what could be modified for my vegan eating, not to mention being able to describe the dishes of the day in a way that made me want to not be vegan just for that meal. I had the braised chickpeas and, man, that did NOT disappoint --- soooo good!! My husband had the Ahi Tuna and was in love at first bite. Then, to my surprise, Josh told us that they actually had a vegan dessert which was tapioca with a cookie crumble, topped with a velvety smooth mango ice cream (not sorbet, but actually creamy). I saved some room and tried it and I was glad that I did. The views are amazing, by-the-way. I highly recommend this restaurant whether you're vegan or not. We will be back for another date night, you can count on it.

We sat down and one of the bussers took our drink order. The server came and took our food order shortly after. My wife’s coffee arrived with my son’s juice. The busser hurried away and did not bring any cream or sugar for the coffee. I had ordered a Bloody Mary and figured it was being made at the bar. No one checked back with us. After another 5-10 minutes half our food order gets brought to the table. I asked the server about my Bloody Mary and she said the busser never told her. She offered to comp it but I had already started eating. After another 5 min the rest of our order was dropped. The server came back to apologize again about the Bloody Mary and see if I wanted a free one “to go”. I politely declined but asked if they could get my wife’s coffee refreshed as they hadn’t offered since it came originally. She walked away and never came back to refill the coffee. The food was great, ambiance was beautiful, and the service is normally very good.

Sat at an ocean view table. Loved the breathtaking views of the ocean and Santa Cruz Wharf. We had the crab-cake thaty were great, all crab no filler. The noise from the bar makes the dining room a little hard to enjoy. It is not a bad place but I expected more from it from the ratings I saw. The service was exceptional and the vibe was super chill!

Lots of seafood restaurants in Santa Cruz overcook fish, but the halibut was cooked beautifully. Our waiter was friendly and helpful with suggestions. The flavors were unique and tasty.

One might consider a restaurant with a view (and designer branding) like Jack O’Neill’s to fit into the “tourist trap” category, but this eatery seems to be the go to fancy booking spot for local first dates, office parties, and parents visiting their adult children attending UC Santa Cruz as well as the upscale tourist set. The service is professional/California-casual. Veggies (and some meats and seafood) seem to be sourced locally. Wine list; decent selection of California Pinots & Chards. As expected, you’ll pay a little extra for the view, but almost every reserved two-top will get you a window seat, or at least a prime people watching placement.

Wonderful server that didn’t miss a beat and stunning location. The food was amazing as well. Best clam chowder I’ve ever had and wonderful charcuterie board to start the meal followed by wonderfully flavored ribeye and ahi tuna. We will be back as soon as we can.

The service was really slow. Also, there were a few mistakes made. For example, soup was brought to the table and we had to ask twice for spoons so we could eat the soup. There were also two mistakes made in the check. Some dishes were outstanding but a couple were mediocre. We were there for a birthday celebration and overall, it was a success. The view of the ocean and pier were outstanding. But, considering the high price, we expected better service and food.

The food was AMAZING! My boyfriend and I both ordered the Ribeye steak & let me tell you, this is one of THE first places that ever cooked it correctly (Medium Rare). The steak was so juicy & tender & the french fries were so fresh! I would 10/10 recommend and we’ll definitely be back!

Fresh fish from monterey, great crab cakes, perfectly cooked steak, nice drink and wine selection with great food presentation. Views were beautiful and the service was 5-star. We were seated immediately at reservation time, water was kept topped up, the server checked on us throughout and the delivery of drinks, appetizer and main courses were just right. The caesar with anchovies took us by surprise. One of the best seafood salads we’ve had in a long time. 5/5 great experience overall.

The noise level was really high due to the restaurant’s proximity to the bar. The food was great, the server (Tracy) was excellent - very cheerful and attentive. But the noise level was just overpowering.
