Set in a historic 19th-century Victorian, once-turned-local hospital. Now a vibrantly restored dining atmosphere, a wonderfully appointed Bed and Breakfast.

The Kirby Hotel & J. Paul's Dining Room features a fresh, bright menu with something for everyone's taste and price point. Carefully crafted cocktails, an array of award-winning wines, and a culinarily modern, yet classical take on food await your evening. Given multiple awards for its outstanding dining and service.

The staff and Chef LaBelle give a friendly and personable approach to your dining experience. Fresh Locally sourced products are used at their prime. The Prime-aged Prime Rib and Duck dishes are signatures, there are always fresh fish and seafood options as well as vegan and vegetarian options. We cater to all dietary needs.

In the summertime, we offer outdoor seating on our wrap-around porch or our beautifully landscaped back deck overlooking a large pond with a fountain with often-seen wildlife

J Paul’s is my favorite restaurant in Douglas. The staff is always friendly and very accommodating, the food is always top notch and not at all over-priced like other dining establishments in the area. I had the duck for the first time and loved it! My partner ordered the prime rib and it was excellent. And we always order the brioche rolls with basil butter, along with the soup special, which was a to-die-for cream of asparagus. I highly recommend this gem of a restaurant, and I can’t wait to return for another great dinner next month!

Fabulous date night with the wife. Courtney took great care of us. The adjoining table of boys added to the ambience and comfortable atmosphere. We started with Brie perfectly baked en croute with a delicious raspberry Cabernet sauce. Probably one of the best bries we’ve ever had. For the main course the prime rib is a favorite. Did not disappoint. Offer an 8, 12 and 18 ounce. Tender to cut with a butter knife. I went with another favorite in the Duck Breast Port Wine and Chantrelle Mushroom. Duck was crispy on the outside and had great flavor, despite it being overcooked just a bit. The aged Gouda gratin was a nice complement to the dish, along with a Pinot Noir from Williamette Valley. Some of the best Pinots. We finished with the homemade coconut cake and Butter Pecan cheesecake. Both fresh and delicious. Definitely will come back for some of their other features. Lovely night on the old 19th century home.

It was a busy night and we were a table of eight. Never felt as though we were receiving slow service. Courtney was great. Food was also great. We will be back!

The four of us had a forever memorable birthday celebration dinner. We intentionally picked a Wednesday evening hoping it would be quiet enough for older ears to enjoy conversation - and it was. Our appetizer was more unique than its name suggested and was a creative, tasty work of art. Each of us ordered a different entree. All were generous portions, beautifully presented with delicious layers of flavor. Our server was delightful and eager to answer our questions. She took great care to see we had anything we could possibly need and that we had a wonderful evening. This is truly one of the hidden gems of Douglas. We will definitely be returning to dine at The Kirby. Maybe we will see you there.

First time there, but will be returning. Wonderful meal. Scallops appetizer was great. Only concern is vegetables (brussel sprouts) could have been done better, but that is a minor concern. Main course of Prime Rib and Salmon were both very good and great portions. Will return soon.

Always a great experience. The chef is incredibly talented, and the staff is gracious and attentive. This was our fourth or fifth consecutive New Year's Eve dinner here. We will be back. Again and again.

J. Paul’s was an unexpected find right in our own backyard. Set on the main floor of The Kirby House.BnB you walk right into an. Intimate setting with 4 rooms (one holding a well stocked bar). There is a short but well appointed wine list along with some craft cocktails and beers. I had the Maple Bourbon Old Fashioned and Jeffery, our host and server put together a mocktail for my husband. (There is a NA Dark Guiness on Draft as well) We had the Maryland Crabcakes and Brie en croute to start. Having just moved from Maryland we were happy to find these cakes made with lots of blue crab and no fillers. The Brie was easily shared and a nice way to start the meal. Our entrees were the Seared Duck for me and the 8oz Prime Rib for my husband. . I love duck and this was everything you expect, wonderfully crispy skin and melt in your mouth meat. The Prime Rib was exactly medium rare and seasoned perfectly along with green beans and garlic potatoes. I have to say it but because so many places use instant or whipped their potatoes to a creamy consistency that it was nice to have good, textured real mashed potatoes with GARLIC. Dessert was a house dessert prepared for the evening along with a Chocolate Peppermint Martini which was my dessert. Service was well paced and friendly. It was NYE so it was busy but also apparent that many of the folks coming in were regulars. We intend to be too! J.Pauls is great for a special night out or just to go and get an exceptional meal in a casual attire atmosphere. I did not see evidence of high chairs or a Children’s menu but I wasn’t really looking.

Couldn't have picked a better place for our Anniversary Dinner and start to our adventure. Wife had The Prime Rib, I had The Salmon along with Caesar Salads & Crab Cakes. I'm a member of the clean plate club but portions so big I had to get a box. I finished it on the way to the car, but still.... Service was awesome and the ambience was wonderful as not noisy, soft music in the background. Ya can't come to the area and not visit The Kirby. E like going to Paris and not seeing The Eiffel Tower. Cheers

Food great - the lamb pasty appetizer was out of this world! Also the prime rib, and I am typically not a fan. All food very good, but ambiance needs some help. Too bright, doesn't feel cozy. Simple lighting and changing the seating around with candles on tables would help quite a bit. Also paint the walls a warmer color. Very stark and non-inviting on the inside.

We had prime rib and duck. Both were superb. The only negative was we came in before anyone and had a small table by the window. Then a large group came in and was seated right next to us. It was a little too cozy for our liking. All in all it was a place we would go back to again.

My husband took me to the Kirby House for my birthday and we had a fantastic time. It was a cozy atmosphere with wonderful food. I was also surprised that I got free dessert for my birthday!

It was off season so very quiet but the service could not have been better. The food was outstanding. We all had the prime rib which was cooked perfectly. Everything was hot when it came to the table, portions were more than adequate. Overall was a very nice evening.

We have never had a disappointing experience or meal at J. Paul's Dining Room at The Kirby. The food is always excellent, the wine list is spectacular, and the service is outstanding. The atmosphere is inviting, yet eclectic, and just enjoyable. This has become one of our favorite places to dine year round in Douglas, Michigan. I had the scallops, while my dining partners feasted on the prime rib. This was after enjoying some of their appetizer fare. Everything was mouthwatering! Thank you for another amazing experience.

This is a local restaurant for us and we've eaten there several times, the most recent of which was Thanksgiving. The traditional meal of turkey and stuffing was wonderful........the turkey was moist and cooked to perfection. Three other entrees were offered so the special menu was well rounded. As usual, the staff was friendly and attentive. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Excellent Thanksgiving spread. Traditional turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole and apple pie, but all done well. The vegetable risotto and prime rib were very nice alternatives and much enjoyed by our party. The location is quiet and quaint, the service is attentive and alert. All together, an fantastic way to enjoy the holiday and not have to do the prep or cleanup.
