Derived from the Chinese Pinyin word “huo lu”, meaning fire pit, HOLU is a modern Asian steakhouse featuring the world’s finest meat — including USDA Prime beef, dry aged in-house with Himalayan pink salt, as well as snow aged Japanese A5 Wagyu, Australian Wagyu, North American Wagyu and more. Complemented with the most sustainable seafood and freshest organic vegetables available, omakase style menus are prepared on a smokeless, ceramic charcoal grill. The bar highlights thoughtfully curated, progressive cocktails as well as select wine, spirits, sake and beer. HOLU is located in Chicago’s West Chinatown neighborhood. Reservations are accepted for parties up to six. Complimentary lot parking is available.

Bartender, drinks, ambiance, food - every point of service was outstanding. Leo, who guided us tableside, restored our entire table's faith in the fine art of hospitality. Exceptional experience.

This was THE perfect spot to celebrate my husband's birthday! The vibe was spot on and the food was incredible. Our grill attendant Leo was attentive, friendly, and fun. It's definitely a special occasion spot that is well worth the price.

Service is excellent all around. We had the classic omakase. Delicious and filling (except for my teenage son, who I gave most of my meat to after taking a bite of each piece). For appetizers we ordered the scallops and crab cake. Also tasty. Highly recommend.

Absolutely loved it! It was an amazing dining experience with top quality food. Our server was Leo and he truly spoiled us! He also guided us through the menu, ensuring we got the best out of the food we ordered and the sequence in which we had each course. Honestly didn't even need the menu! The bartender was the most knowledgeable and skilled I've seen in a long time, suggesting spirits and cocktails on our questions and noting the ingredients he was using for us. Truly elevated the experience even further. We can't wait to go back!

Raise your hand if you think doing a photo shoot for your restaurant with bright flashing lights should be tolerated at a restaurant where you’re celebrating a special occasion and where you’re spending almost $500 to eat for four? Well if you want this experience feel free to come here. Oh and if you want the manager to come over and gaslight you for being upset by this activity with an explanation of how he’s “so accomplished in restaurants” then come here. Really terrible customer service. Our waiter spent the entire night focusing on the photo shoot versus actual paying customers. We thought of a zero tip, but we’re nicer than that especially since you are cooking your own food. Don’t come here people.

The professional conducting the photo shoot was moved to another table almost immediately after expressing your concern to avoid further disruption of your dining experience. The guests at your table also opted to cook directly, whereas the HOLU experience is built around our team - trained in usage of the ceramic tabletop grills - preparing the ingredients and cooking for our guests. We are sorry to read that your visit fell so short of your expectations despite our efforts to alleviate your concerns. Excellent experience- the food and service is amazing. Similar to a wine tasting, sampling the many cuts of meat showcased the nuances and flavors of the beef. The presentation is artistic and cooking at the table unique. Leo, our Chef, is outstanding with his culinary skills and attention to details. Leo made us feel at home and special. I highly recommend.

Every aspect of the meal was excellent. The cocktails were tasteful and complex, the meat was delicious and tender, and the dessert was rich and creamy. Would absolutely recommend.

This place is really phenomenal! The experience is unique, fhe steak flights are amazing, the service is outstanding and the bartenders are superb. We’ve been here many times and have the best time every time. Leo, Eddie, Jamie, Emily, Todd and Linda are at the top of the service sector!

First time coming to Holu and the service was phenomenal. Leo and Linda were great from the moment we arrived till the end, the food was delicious! Leo was one of the best servers I have ever had and Linda was so attentive making sure everything was good, they were exceptional! Definitely coming back here again. :)

Everything was delicious!!!!! Omg one of the best meals we’ve ever had. The scallops, dumplings, the crab cake is a MUST! Australian wagyu!!!! And then sea bass and duck (my least favorite) were good as well

Quite the gem located in South side of Chicago. First time and we were quite impressed. It was not busy for a Saturday night. If it's your first time to such restaurant, expect to ask a lot of questions. Delicious food and great staff who guided us how to pair the food. Advice: be starved when you get there! And yes, be ready to spend. This is not a your around the corner joint. Thank you for an amazing experience! Will return :-)

Eduardo, our server, was absolutely phenomenal. What a nice young man. He made our experience unique and unforgettable. He had fantastic recommendations and was very polite and outgoing. We wish him the best as he’s got a bright future ahead of him. I urge everyone to try the filet mignon, prawn, and lobster tail. Don’t be afraid to try a varied assortment. Ambience, Construction, Service, & quality were all top notch. Added to the list of repeat restaurants.

Our server/chef was great. She was knowledgeable and entertaining as well as really staying on her toes. She cooked for our table and a couple others at the same time and you would never know her attention was divided. Food was fantastic and plentiful. It was a very nice experience.

This was Valentine's night out for my wife and I on the 30th year since we first met. Holu was really great - intimate, cozy and romantic. Our Waitress/Cook, Gracia, was perfect. The food was awesome. Highly recommend it.

Celebrating birthday with my husband. Usually restaurants offer like a mini desert for the celebrant. We were told it was not the case - it’s prohibited. I felt bad I picked this restaurant to celebrate. Overall that made the experience bad for us

Would highly recommend the signature option to try several different cuts as well as some phenomenal apps and sides. A5 wagyu New York is insane.

Overall, Holu was a lovely experience. The restaurant's aesthetic, especially for a mall location, was impressive, and our private booth with a grill was fun. Although we initially thought we'd be cooking, having a dedicated chef at our table turned out to be a pleasant surprise, ensuring the food was expertly prepared. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable, contributing to a positive atmosphere. However, the overall pace of the experience was slower than expected, so be prepared for a bit of a wait. We indulged in 4 meat cuts and the Wagyu fried rice; the latter stole the show, emerging as our favorite fried rice ever. Among the Australian Wagyu cuts, the culotte stood out with its tenderness and buttery perfection. The short rib followed as our next favorite, then the zabuton, and finally, the Australian Wagyu filet. We sampled 2 ounces of each cut, resulting in a nearly $200 total bill. While we anticipated the cost, it's unlikely we'd pay that much for a meal here again. Nevertheless, Holu is recommended for those seeking a fun, unique dining experience and a night out.

The food is always good but some of the staff has a weird vibe. I’ve been 3x, had the same guy as our waiter and he is so pleasant, knowledgeable and energetic but the last 2 times, the women who cooked our food were dry and seemed irritated when we asked for more of certain items. We made clear that we didn’t mind paying, etc but they seem like they don’t want to be bothered with doing their jobs.

Food was delicious. But the service was below expectations. It was several minutes before we were offered water. Was starting to get offended at the length of the delay when the wait staff arrived to take our drink order which also took a long time to arrive. Overall, the meal was delicious, but I didn’t feel like I was in the same restaurant I read about in the Chicago Reader.
