A sushi bar and Japanese bistro. Inspired by the sushi bars in Tokyo. Himitsu introduces Japanese culture, design, and hospitality to San Diego.

Our 8 person sushi bar and 20 person patio is located in a discrete corner of La Jolla, a setting well suited to our name, which translate to "Secret" in Japanese.

Chef Mitsu Aihara presents a menu of traditional sushi and nigiri, along with Japanese style tapas using the high quality products and ingredients.

The food was really good, but it took over an hour for us to get it, and our server hardly spoke to us. We wanted to order more, as we were still hungry, but never got an opportunity to ask since our reservation was only for 90 minutes — our server made sure we were aware of that when we sat down. After asking for the check, we ended up waiting for an additional 30 minutes before asking a host for the check. It’s pretty disappointing to pay over 200 dollars and leave hungry. I hope this was just an off night for Himitsu, but we won’t be coming back.

Only slot available was for 9pm. Called the restaurant to confirm what time they close, I was assured that the information posted online is incorrect for Fridays and Saturdays. Last call at 10pm. Called to request earlier seating if available, and was told could sit at the bar at 8:45, so I preferred to keep the table at 9pm. As soon as we arrived, 8:59pm the server gave us the menus and told us we had to order quickly as they close at 9:30pm! We kept on being pressured for last order, without any orders coming till the table before I started complaining that there’s no way to judge if we want to order more if there’s no food served, and that feeling of being rushed in a highly rated supposedly gourmet restaurant should not be acceptable! Manager came and apologized, then the treatment changed and they kept the kitchen open until we were done eating and ordering more. However, I had higher expectations of the Salmon Belly - I clearly asked the waitress to explain to sushi chef that I expect belly to be fatty as in white coloured quality, in such a restaurant. It was very disappointing. The waggyu nigiri was out of these world, we ordered it twice. The spice n spicy roll is the best dish we had. The yellow fin Tuna was highly appraised as well. Soft shell crab roll was average, nothing special. The restaurant needs to stop taking 9pm reservations if they can’t offer high quality service to the guests.

Excellent as always! Michelle was a superb host and we thoroughly enjoyed our whole experience. The sushi was fresh and delicious, the spinach salad is the best I’ve had and the sake presentation with cup selection was fun and sweet. Can’t wait to come back!

Excellent, diverse selection of fresh fish both local and from Japan - perfectly prepared to highlight the flavor and texture of each fish. The staff were lovely, very knowledgable with regard to the fish they were serving and attentive. Will definitely go back!

Delicious lunch with a super friendly staff that are very knowledgeable on the sushi they serve. Ordered the daily bento box and it was a yummy large portion alon he with miso soup.

It was nice. I didn’t realize the outdoor space was in the parking lot. The food was good. Our server was great, Bathrooms located in a different building & you needed a key to access. Very strange. I would think during the hours of operation in La Jolla, you can use the restrooms w/out a key attached to a board!!!

I really love this restaurant it’s one of my favorite places to eat I really love the food and it’s all fresh. It’s a great place to spend time with your friends and family and enjoy the experience . I really recommend this place.

Himitsu is wonderful. We tried it last year when we were visiting and we made sure we had a sushi bar reservation for this year's visit. It's such a a great experience, not snobby, not intimidating. The entire staff is so warm and welcoming. Kudos to our server Brandon who patiently guided us through an incredible dining experience.

This was one of the best sushi experiences I’ve ever had. We sat at the sushi bar and had a front row seat to the delicious items made for us. I highly recommend letting the chef choose your items - it won’t disappoint! As someone with a gluten allergy, I was thrilled that nearly the entire menu was gluten free (including the shrimp tempura)! The service was excellent. The staff were personable and incredibly friendly. The ambiance was great (the playlist was perfection). I cannot recommend this place enough.

First time visit. Staffs were friendly and attentive. Patio seating were so relaxing and nice. Quality of the daily bento, lobster miso soup and the Himitsu bowl with salmon were all below average. Raw fish is fresh, other than that, nothing really special about it. Hot plates are disappointing. I tried it and I don’t think I will not go back.

We go out of our way to visit Himitsu every time we visit La Jolla. Love their lunch bento box, karaage chicken, sushi platters and specialty rolls.

Great owner, great food quality & tastes, but fix-its include: 1) sushi nigiri rice did not stick together so almost all our pieces made sadly fall apart with chopsticks or even gentle finger grip, 2) out of yummy lobster soup by 8:30pm, 3) sunomono needs simple rice wine vinegar sauce not overly hot & distracting spicy sauce, 4) needs to have simple Plum Wine by the glass or bottle (even cheap Takara from Berkeley good), 5) despite OT resy last resy times @ 8:45pm, the lady servers all HOUND you upon seating that now “last call for food as the kitchen soon closes”…how horrible, RUDE & UNGRACIOUS. The lovely & present owner Mitsu, a proud descendant of famed Mr. Ota) hopefully wants to make $$$ & welcome & keep his customers ? Special place, nonetheless.

Meh. The food was ok. The wasabi Caesar was my favorite thing I ate. The portions were very very small, and I say that from the perspective of someone who is skeptical when sushi portions are too large. The prices were too high for the tiny portions and limited menu. The music was bad and waaaaay too loud. Our server was very nice. And nothing bothers me more than having a reservation for which I am on time, and literally having the first thing they tell me be “you have to finish in 90 minutes” because they have another reservation coming in. Dude - I get it, and there is no way I’m going to be there longer than 90 minutes, but that should NEVER be something you say to someone who is on time and just sitting down.

We’ve dined at Himitsu multiple times and have had wonderful experiences and food. We started with a lovely evening this time as well which came to a screeching halt when after on hour our server asked if we were planning to order anything else because our table had another reservation. We were shocked. Not sure if their plan is to go from fine Japanese dining to fast food? Very disappointing—the pre-prepared dessert we were offered as consolation added insult to injury. Not sure we’ll go back. Buyer beware if you’re planning a reasonably leisurely dinner.
