At Hemmingway's Bistro the menu combines classic French dishes with the freshest Midwest ingredients.
The daily specials reflect the chef's love for fresh seafood. Using mostly East-coast seafood flown in from Boston daily, the chef creates dishes like wild mushroom-crusted halibut on horseradish whipped potatoes and roasted sea bass on Caussoulet beans.
There is also a Parisian seafood bar offering towers of Plateau de Fruit de Mer with fresh oysters, clams, shrimp, and lobster.

I thoroughly enjoyed Hemmingway's. The food was excellent as well asa the drinks. We had shrimp scampi,white fish and steak frites. All were very tasty and generous portions. The service was great despite the crowd. Loved the atmosphere. Felt like I was actually in a Paris Bistro. Will definitelycome again

I have been dining at Hemingway’s Bistro for literally decades. The food is well thought out and expertly presented. It’s a friendly local restaurant and I am never disappointed. Kate was our server. She is excellent with a quick wit and great customer service.

A charming little dining room. The bread was excellent. Our server was very nice. Ordered a dessert that took 35 minutes to prepare when we ordered our meals, so it would come directly after our entrees, as we were going to a play after dinner. We let our server know that. Salad wasn't very flavorful. We both had fish entrees. Good, but not exceptional. Once our entrees were cleared away, our server told us dessert would be out in about eight minutes. We waited another 25-30 minutes. The dessert for which we waited (a souffle) was fine but didn't knock our socks off. The cream that was served with my coffee had turned. Between that and the dessert delay, I would have expected dessert to be comped, but it wasn't. Not likely to go back.

The decor is attractive the service attentive , Two of us had the scallops which were outstanding, but the 2 of us that had the beef Wellington were disappointed. The pastry was soggy, the druxelle tasteless and the beef overcooked. (likely pre-cooked and then reheated.) All the reasons that make a beef Wellington magnificent were missing.

The picture advertised on this website for this restaurant shows the picture of "Fruit de Mer," but this dish is not available for order. It is deceiving as we went there to order this seafood platter. So disappointing. The service is awesome, and the waiter deserves the credit.

A lovely little place that will impress your parents and out-of-towners. Cozy feel, incredible seasonal menus, and a desert menu not to miss. It can get kind of loud during busy hours because it's a small space, but if you time it right, you'll get an intimate fine-dining experience that exceeds expectations!

Sunday brunch at Hemingway Bistro was a great way to prepare for our FLW Studio and Home tour. We ordered off the menu and enjoyed our selections...crepes and crab cakes. Our server was most helpful with neighborhood tips and the restaurant and food were very instagrammable ;)

One of our favorite spots. We go for special occasions or on the spur of the moment. This time was the latter. The restaurant was nearly full when we arrived. We started with an excellent French 77 cocktail. The special butternut squash soup was velvety and full of flavor. The French onion soup is a classic. The cassoulet had all the hallmarks of comfort food. The meat was perfectly cooked and the beans creamy. The perfect bite. The rabbit ragout had a creamy mushroom sauce reminiscent of a stroganoff. The perfect ending to the meal—profiteroles.

Everything was wonderful. My only complaint was that it was very warm in the restaurant and that the table are really close together. It makes it hard to get in and out to go and visit the buffet table for brunch.

For over 20 years this has been one of my favorite French venues and my absolute favorite Oak Park restaurant, that’s what makes this review so difficult. Unfortunately the restaurant put a child in charge of the host stand, our experience was unbelievably rude and childlike, she literally told us to go sit down when we asked about our reservation. Someone should take the time to explain to this young lady what it takes to be successful in the hospitality industry. I will not be back…..

Great place for a birthday celebration. Started with a French 77 cocktail followed by the mushroom soup special. The beef Wellington is one of my husband’s favorites. It did not disappoint. The special raspberry soufflé was the perfect finish. Thanks Axel for taking such good care of us.

This is a delightful little bistro that could be so much more than it is. The food is well flavored - the whitefish entree and lobster salad were good, but the mussels were small and many of them were not fully opened enough for us to be comfortable eating them. There was a LOT of sauce - almost too much, was more like a soup than a sauce. The bread is good, but should be served warm. Last, while the service was pleasant, knowledgeable and friendly, the pace was unreasonably, annoyingly, ridiculously slow. We waited a full hour between our appetizers and the main course, then another 30 minutes for the souffle, which we had - by that point - ordered two hours before!! I appreciate unrushed meals as much as anyone, but we were at the table for >3 hours for one appetizer, one entree and a shared dessert. That's too long.

My wife had the red snapper (a special) and I had the seared scallops. We started with an endive salad. Had several reasonably-priced wines by the glass. All first rate. Hemmingway's never disappoints.

Such good ambiance for Valentine’s day! Live jazz, nixe lighting, flowers and candles. Butternut swash ravioli was a bit oily but everything else was great. Great for date night.

Service at Hemingway's is always wonderful. Onion soup is always outstanding! My husband's steak was excellent. Chicken pot pie was under salted and sort of flavorless. Everything could have been about half the size. Lovely setting, but tables are very close together. On Valentine's Day, the crowded atmosphere was a little overwhelming. I have had better food at Hemingway's on many occasions, so I will still go there and recommend it to friends.

The Food was Delicious & wonderfully French We had the French Onion & Mushroom Soup and they were outstanding !! My Duck was Cooked Perfectly & my Wife Loved the Butternut Squash Ravioli !! BUT, the STAR of the Meal was my Mango Vanilla Soufflé, just Fantastic & my Wife had a Delicious Crème Brûlée !! We will try the Brunch next, with the Grandchildren !! Thank You

My partner and I look young for our age and we were asked if we planned to order any other food after initially ordering an appetizer - clearly insinuating if we can even afford to spend more (this was later reinforced when the waiter kept advising what the prices were.) That was rectified later when I asked for an alcoholic beverage half way through dinner and the waiter asked for our ID and saw our actual age - then immediately looked apologetic for the sass they gave earlier on where they insinuated if we could afford the meal. - we tipped 20% still and we spent $163 after tip and tax - nothing crazy, but also by no means "cheapskates." This is Oak Park, we can afford the meal and we've never received this type of service at previous French restaurants in the Chicagoland area. There were no candles lighting the restaurant, like other intimate French restaurants in the area. I'd recommend at least dimming the lights more and lighting with candles, since they were going for intimate setting, but clearly failed at it with cheap Christmas lights. Our waiter couldn't even speak French, which if I'm going for a "proper" French restaurant, at least hire staff who can speak French. The food was good, but the experience was mediocre at best. Would recommend Bistro Campagne or Mon Ami Gabi for the same price, same great quality of food, but way better experience.

Sunday brunch is always a nice break and the jazz is wonderful. The crepes au gratin were outstanding as always. Unfortunately the sweets were a little disappointing. The brownies were amazing but the cakes were dry and nothing special. The temperature was challenging as it is still winter but the tables in front of the windows were incredibly hot with the sun beaming in.
