The Godfather, a Balistreri restaurant, is an Italian monument in downtown San Diego providing authentic cuisine from the hills of Italy. Established in 1974, The Godfather is a sophisticated and classy establishment that centers around generational recipes from both Northern and Southern Italy. Over the years, the quality of food and standard of service has never declined and thus garnered The Godfather a national recognition as one of the top twenty-five Italian restaurants in the entire nation. Service was great and it’s nice to see restaurants still doing the little things throughout your courses. Food was okay— pasta was just under par but looked pretty aesthetically.

From when we entered the restaurant everyone was extremely polite and friendly. Our waiter Joe was delightful. Food was delicious and portions were huge, enough for dinner the next night.

We loved it. We haven’t been there in about 20 years but it’s definitely a wonderful restaurant to dine at. We ordered the Ny Steak and the Steak Sinatra (my entree) and they both were cooked perfectly. The complimentary Fried Zucchini is the same style from 20 years ago and is served with butter (I asked for a side of Tomato Sauce to dip Zucchini in and they were nice enough to oblige). Before our entrees were served, fresh hot bread was delivered in a basket (You’ll definitely want this delicious bread to dip in that wonderful Sinatra sauce. Our server was absolutely wonderful. He was personable and gave us great explanations for the menu items we were unsure of. The steaks come with a side of pasta. We also were able to see entrees being delivered to other tables being wheeled out on a food cart and are looking forward to trying out their Godfather Steak which is on my list. We skipped dessert since we opted for wine but I have to say that this restaurant brings me back home to NJ. In my home state, Italian Steakhouses are popular and this one is amazing.

I always enjoy going to the Godfather. Sean, our waiter, was excellent, and our meals were delicious. The new owners are amiable and welcoming. The Godfather is consistently good.

Godfather Restaurant continues to be my favorite place to take my wife. We are always treated as if we are VIP's. The food was amazing, the suggestions for wine with dinner were on point. The staff appears to enjoy where they work.

Have not been here is a while, so was nice to go back. When we got there we requested a booth, and the only ones they had were in the bar. Quite frankly, there was a pianist playing a bit loud for us in the main dinning area, so the bar area was nice as we could hear him, but not so loud that we couldn't have a conversation. Wife had a filet (which I had a couple of bites of) and was very good. I had the Cioppino, which is always a favorite for me. Most enjoyable. Service was very good, along with a wine recommendation.

My birthday dinner was flawless! We got the best seat (booth) in the house! Sean N was the most charming server I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting! The artichoke and zucchini appetizers were amazing! All of their dishes were great! We had the Lasagna al Forno, the Spaghetti Bolognese, the Blue Crab Ravioli with Shrimp and the SeaBass…all delicious! The dessert birthday platter was such a delight for my birthday too! Overall, a fantastic dining experience!

Well it’s went down hill under new ownership. It’s just not the same . I’ve been going for many years and this is the first time I’ve been disappointed. A 54 dollar New York and they brought the condement in a plastic to go cup with the plastic lid on it. Not being petty just if you’re going to do it do it right.

Food was great as usual. But, service was lacking and they put us in this tight booth in the corner when there were plenty of tables and nicer seating available. And, the waiter seemed like he was not happy to be serving us. He seemed to be in a bad mood. Maybe, since it was Easter he didn’t really want to be working that day. Anyway, I’ve had a better experience in the past when I’ve gone to this restaurant.

Very beautiful and cozy feel. Service is on spot. For the amount of money we spent, I would have thought the wine glasses would have free of water stains. We bought a pretty good priced bottle which was delicious, but felt like we were pouring it into cloudy stained glasses. Not too classy. Filet was excellent, Bolognese tasted burnt. Not sure why we were served butter with the complimentary zucchini? Would have preferred marinara. Probably won’t be back, so many other restaurants to choose from that take a little more pride in their appearance.

They were very welcoming. The server was very attentive and knew the wines and menu well. She made excellent suggestions. They even had the pianist play happy birthday for my son. He loves the old fashion ambiance and started dining here with friends in high school. I’m sure this family tradition will continue.

Came here for a special event. And definitely a good choice! From service as soon as you walk in, the ambiance of the restaurant really giving a fancy italian mob restaurant 😂, then the fooooddd!!!! It was amazing. Everyone was happy with their meal. I would definitely come back here again, good for date night, or big group.

Steak was not as good as when Anthony was there. Now there is cooked garlic on top which is not good. New vegetables were not that good. Value is definitely not that good. 300 for two persons. I could go to Ruth’s Chris for this amount in Del Mar. don’t think I’ll be back. :-(

Joe was our server and Mike also assisted us. They were great! I gave 5 stars because overall, it deserves it, however, I can honestly say that the food wasn't as good as in the past when we used to frequent here. A bit disappointed in that. The side of pasta was bland and the tomatoes sauce that goes with it tasted like it came out of a jar. Just a couple of examples of how we felt about the food.

Very unexpected because from the outside you would never imagine. As soon as you open the doors its like you travel directly into Rome. A pianist welcomes you with amazing live music. Food was truly excellent!!!!! I usually dont write reviews but this was really really a great experience!! Cant wait to be back! 🫶🏼

A glass of water spilled & broke. Instead of cleaning it up, they covered it with bar towels then a folded tablecloth. Sloppy and uneven. Has new ownership lowered their standards. Not sure we'll rush to get back.

Fantastic. Food 5, Energy 5, People 5, damn it everything was perfect. The only thing was the parking but they had valet. Best Italian food in SD.

We’ve been multiple times. Usually it’s very good food and excellent service. This time the service was incredibly slow and overall poor. The food was still good but the night was ruined by the awful service

It feels like you're in a high-end Italian restaurant in New Yok. The food was delicious. I will definitely be returning to Godfathers.
