The Formosa Cafe is a restaurant and bar founded in 1939 and located at 7156 Santa Monica Boulevard at the intersection with North Formosa Avenue, in West Hollywood, California.

The restaurant has a long history of movie star and film industry patronage due to its close proximity to studio lot across the street, which began as the United Artists lot and was later owned by Warner Bros. Generations of movie stars such as Humphrey Bogart and Clark Gable have eaten meals at The Formosa. Frank Sinatra is reputed to have spent many nights at the Formosa in the 1950s, pining over Ava Gardner.

After a brief 2 year hiatus, a complete refurbishment, and a tremendous menu update The Formosa Cafe has returned to serve the Los Angeles community once again.

The food and ambience were fantastic. A fun place to eat and get a glimpse of old Holyeood. But… Meals for the four of us came out one at a time .. 15 minutes between each. Then… 2 of the same item was brought by accident and we were charged for it ( it was promptly taken off the bill). No apology for the staggered serving

Had a great time. Great vibe / ambience. There was a noisy party but our waiters apologized for it in advance which helped in our understanding.

Very dissatisfied, food was cold, drinks were warm , tables too small seating uncomfortable and super expensive, would not recommend or return - server Sophia was nice but too distracted talking /chatting :(

This was a fun last minute stop of our holiday. We were seated in the oldest surviving Red Car train with Angel as our waiter. My wife ordered the hot Sake and I ordered a Cold Brew Martini. For dinner we enjoyed the Veggie Bao Dumpling, Formosa Chow Fun (our favorite dish of this meal; soft rice noodles offset by snappy bean sprouts, fried garlic and nicely coated XO sauce), and Orange Chicken (tender chicken, crisp coating, spicy, sweet). It was delicious! Only wish that our hotel room had a refrigerator so that we could take the leftovers home.

I adore the Formosa and have been coming here for decades. It's so nice that some things never change! Unique, gorgeously appointed, with magnificent food and service. A real treasure.

The food was much better than it was 20 years ago, but wouldn’t be up there with the best of Chinese restaurants in Los Angeles. For example, the food was overly salty, but still mostly better than your average Chinese food place. The vibe was as I remember it. Very Hollywood-y with some recognizeable faces and eccentric guests.

We had a large group that all overall really enjoyed the food and especially the ambiance at Formosa. The food was solid and the larger portions made it easy and fun to share. The cocktails were okay. The vibe is fantastic.
