Fat Hen, sister to La Brasa, is a small fifteen table, thirty seat restaurant that focuses on Pasta and Wine with an Italian roots. Our team focuses on guest experience and creating memories; from when you first walk through the door to when you take your final bite. My husband and I wanted to do something different and special for his mother for Mother's Day. She did the 3 course mother's day dinner and my husband and I did the 4 course. The food for each course was delicious. Mom thought everything she had was great and it was dishes she hasn't had before. We definitely want to go back.

Accepted reservations for a Sunday, confirmed it, and they are not open on Sundays. Several other parties sat outside the restaurant after 5pm waiting for the doors to open. Hours on Apple and Google show they are open at 5pm on Sunday.

Follow up to table between drinks and ordering main was a bit slow. Overall relaxed for a Friday night. Unhurried, and pleasant staff. I believe they work between Fat Hen and La Brassa at the same time. Nice job everyone. Awesome Chef. Every visit is a pleasure. The food is outstandingly balanced. Textural ebb and flow keeps each bite a fresh sensation. Taste is well developed and deep. 7:20-9:25 pm. Wine selections are thoughtful and broad lending great compliments to the ingredients. Peter.

Portions on the cheese plate were comical. We were advised to order 3-5 plates for two people, but the pasta portions were plenty for one person. The carbonara was overwhelmed with black pepper and the bolognese had very little sauce. The service and ambience were nice and portrayed a fine dining experience, but the food itself was disappointing.

Overall, thought service was lacking for menu offering. Waitstaff was not attentive, but was efficient. Pasta itself was good, but sauces were overly salted. Should have just gone to LasBrasas next door - place was hopping. Weird cubed steak tartare - covered with a heavy sauce - mayo based maybe?

Food here was excellent but service was some of the worst I’ve ever had. Everyone we came into contact with (specifically server and hostess) seemed wildly inconvenienced by our presence. Our server was incredibly rude — no welcome, no help with the menu, no check ins, even a couple eye rolls. Would have been a favorite as food and ambiance were wonderful but won’t be returning due to terrible service.

The food itself was delicious, highly recommend the mushroom gemelli. However, the service was quite awful. I was there for Valentine's dinner but felt incredibly disregarded the entire time. The time it took us to receive any service was so long whereas the waitress would be holding friendly conversations with every other table.

Had a delicious meal on Valentine's Day considering it was busy on a weekday. Very creative selections. Enjoyed the cheese plate as an appetizer. Wine selection is very good. It's tight space with seating with winter coats so that's why it's a four for me . Go there for a great meal!

Great pasta and great ambience! Unfortunately I would not recommend the ribeye…it had uni on top which not only tasted very fishy itself (usually a sign of uni gone bad), but it made the rest of the steak taste fishy. It also had an unexpected bbq rub taste, and these flavors combined were a bit unpleasant. Still would go back though, for the pasta.

I have never written a negative review before but had to in this case. I will say that the appetizers were great, especially the spiced carrots. But the pasta dishes were far too salty and the server was awful. She was not friendly AT ALL and was not attentive either. We have never left less than 20% ever but stick with 15% this time. There were 4 of us and not one of us left happy.

The Fat Hen was ok. The roasted carrots and gemeli were wonderful. The angel hair pasta was way too salty and the olive oil cake was burned on the bottom. When they brought us the wrong entree and we told the server she acted like we had made the mistake and left it in front of us as she went to speak to the kitchen staff. Not great, not bad.

Called ahead and was sold an experience that didn’t exist. Waitress was barely accommodating. Our appetizers were fantastic but duck tortellini was way overstated. Was a birthday dinner which was noted in the open table reservation but not one mention through our visit. It’s too bad, has so much potential but really missed the mark.

Joint restaurant with next door Las Brasas. Shared kitchen. Almost no one at Fat Hen but Mexican side half full. Food was quite good. Writer ver friendly and attentive but very new to restaurant and service industry. Limited wine selection. Kind of a one and done. Neighborhood in transition.

Nice romantic place with attentive, chill staff. Had a chance to chat with the cook as well as the server. Nice people. Spiced carrots and broccolini are outstanding, and mushroom pasta is a knockout. This seems to be a place with a reputation for excellent wine, and our choice confirmed that. Homemade amaro was better than most out of the bottle, but cocktail list could be expanded.

Very tasty and creative dishes. We shared four plates to mix up the flavors. A beet carpaccio and salmon crudo to start, followed by wild mushroom gemelli and short ribs. Each was flavorful, well presented and served in a timely manner. A wonderful experience!

Food so good! Best bronzino I’ve had in ages. Crispy skin, large filet. Topped with delicious greens. Highly recommend. Duck tortellini was heavenly. We nearly licked the bowl. Beet carpaccio somehow tasted like carpaccio and the bread was delicious. Carrots were better last time. Caprese was amazing.

Poor service. Waiter was rude and it was clear she didn’t want to be there. Food was severely subpar - especially for the prices. Tiny portions, arrived cold. Ordered the tagliatelle pomodoro which was cold and tasted like Ragu jarred sauce. Cocktail was good (italian margarita). Very disappointed overall. Save your $ and go elsewhere.

A lovely restaurant with good food. The main dinners that we got were good (pastas were very good) but were really just a protein (delicious pork) but really just a slice of pork on a plate. We were hoping for a bit more - like some vegetables? Also, only two dessert options (both were tasty) and no decaf coffee was available. So - good and fun - but not great.

I went to fat hen years ago and I loved it. There was a tasting menu of creative, interesting, delicious food! I think it may have closed down for a while?? Because I remember trying to go there again and not being able to. When I saw it was back open I got excited but I didn't love my experience there. We had a reservation but the door was locked. We went through la Brasa and the staff were sitting at the tables chatting. They led us to our seats (we were the only people). Afterwards the staff were great, loved our waiter. But the food was...not as I remember it. There was no tasting menu (fine), so we ordered pasta and an appetizer. The pasta was good, but with the heirloom tomato and burrata salad, the tomatoes came out ice cold. They just didn't seem ready for the diners who showed up. I'll give them another chance before giving up--it really was a fantastic spot when we went a few years back.

Hidden gem in East Somerville!! Just bought a place around the corner and I will be back for more! Crudo was a highlight and the pasta was fresh and delicious. Wine list superb.

We first ate at Fat Hen when our son moved to Charlestown many years ago. We enjoyed it so much that we now have a tradition of going to dinner here every time we visit him. We’ve been happy with our meals and service every time and look forward to our next visit.

I think eating at Fat Hen was alright but nothing to die for. I don’t know that I’d even go back to be honest. And not because the food wasn’t good, it was actually really good food. But it feels overpriced for the portion size provided. They try designing the dishes as if they were No. 9 Park. Sure they look nice but At least the service at restaurants like that is 1% level which is why people are willing to pay so much for that food. I would, however, highly recommended the roasted beet with pistachio dish though as it was the best dish we had all night. Another order I made was beef tartare, which itself was pretty good but I expected toast or something to eat it with. I waited for about 2 min before deciding to eat the beef tartare with a fork instead. I wouldn’t say I eat in a hurry, especially when telling a story, but the toast for the tartare finally came as I was finishing the dish with a fork. I ordered a short rib for my main dish just to be told there they were out despite the restaurant being almost empty when we arrive at 7:15pm. All the dishes with the exception of 2 or 3 have dairy so if you have a dairy allergy, this might not be the place for you. And every time my girlfriend asked if there is dairy in a dish or if it can be removed, the waitress seemed almost annoyed. I really would say it’s just an alright experience dining here. Nice for when you can’t find reservations elsewhere or if you want to appear fancier than you are.

Fat Hen is unique and worth your time. Attached to its sister restaurant La Brasa, it's an entirely separate experience that combines a cozy space, a limited but thoughtful wine list and an adventurous chef who presents a modest, eclectic and well-executed selection of starters, entrees, pastas and desserts. The information online needs to be updated; Fat Hen offers a complete menu and full service from a young and enthusiastic staff. It has also just started Sunday dinner service; it's an experiment that deserves to succeed.
