In 1962, Johnny Harlowe made the jump from the silver screen to chef and owner of Dear John’s. Convinced by his pal Frank Sinatra, Johnny opened the iconic spot just a ways down from Sony Studios on Culver Blvd. It became the watering-hole for the Hollywood elite with Sinatra often in the corner playing the piano against the dark brick walls once lined with portraits of famous John’s. Seasoned chefs and entrepreneurs Hans Röckenwagner and Josiah Citrin have teamed up to re-open Dear John’s with an updated classic American menu and old-school cocktail list.

    Always fun with old style dark steakhouse ambience and great cocktails, Caesar Salad for two, chicken Parm Kiev style, and sandabs, plus delicious rhubarb crumble for dessert

    I wanted to love this place there were a few problems. First off, my husband and I were sat at the worst table. I asked to move and was told the other tables were for larger parties. Well, two other, much better tables sat empty the whole time we were there. The food was good but not worth the price. The service also felt very rushed. They were waiting in the wings with our steak as they cleared our salad plates. Our server was lovely and the drinks were good. But I will not be back. Which is too bad because I had a really great meal with friends here a few months ago and was really excited to bring my husband.

    Our dinner reservation was at 6:00. Walking inside was like walking into a very, very dark room with no windows and only a couple of candles - could hardly see the bar area, tables - anything. VERY loud music. Could not have a conversation. We asked to be moved to a table quiter and were informed that there was none. Asked to have the lighting turned up. Didn't happen. Not able to read the menu because it was so dark even with a small candle on the table. Needed our cell phone flashlight function to read the menu. However, the food was excellent and our waiter was very attentive, apologizing for the loud music and dim (almost none) light. Wouldn't go back despite how good the food and wait staff were - unpleasant experience.

    Interior of restaurant was VERY dark. Outside patio felt odd with Astro-turf and highway noise. Service and food though was excellent! Overpriced in my opinion, but an amazing old school Hollywood menu and experience that you have to try at least once! Just don’t expect more than one olive in your martini — that’s right, they charge extra for more than one — but that one is blue cheese filled and absolutely delicious! :)

    Food was good but very expensive! $65 for an 8 ounce of beef can be ok if the meat is grass fed !
