In 1962, Johnny Harlowe made the jump from the silver screen to chef and owner of Dear John’s. Convinced by his pal Frank Sinatra, Johnny opened the iconic spot just a ways down from Sony Studios on Culver Blvd. It became the watering-hole for the Hollywood elite with Sinatra often in the corner playing the piano against the dark brick walls once lined with portraits of famous John’s. Seasoned chefs and entrepreneurs Hans Röckenwagner and Josiah Citrin have teamed up to re-open Dear John’s with an updated classic American menu and old-school cocktail list.

This place is a 10/10. You walk in and feel like you’re instantly transported to somewhere that is not LA, feels like the rat pack 50’s vibe. Food is delicious. Martinis are some of the best in LA. And the service is incredible. Shout out to Eric who is amazing!

Food was fantastic - super dark room, so it took 5-10 min for our eyes to adjust - overall, great experience.

Fabulous steaks and service was impeccable—inside was full so we ate on the patio. Next time we will make sure to reserve early so we can eat in the amazing inside!

We reserved inside at Dear John which was a disaster. It was way too dark and loud. The path to the tables were not illuminated nor the actual table tops. I worried that we would not be able to event see our food. I thought surely someone would trip. I get the vibe but even a 10-20% increase in light either overall or spotlighted on the middle tables would be helpful. Thankfully, we were able to sit outside. We had an attentive server who gave us nice and consistent service. We ordered the sourdough with house made butter. Very good. The Caesar is made table side with fresh toasted croutons. I personally like a creamer dressing but nonetheless it was tasty. The chicken parmigiana is different as it is served bone-in. Very lovely. The lamb with the mint jelly was a highlight. Very tender and well seasoned. I opted for a butterflied treatment of my steak which was a poor choice. Medium came very well so I was only able to eat 1/2 of it. The other part was too done. Sides were tasty (potatoes and mushrooms). My friends had the rhubarb dresser which they raved about.

Jeffery was our waiter and we received excellent service. We had two small children with us and he was very attentive with us ! Food was great ! Thank you

Sat outside which is nice/casual. Inside is super cool/speak-easy like. Food and service were amazing. Special place.

I wanted to love it because I’m a huge fan of all the Josiah Citron spots, but this one was crazy! It was so dark inside I almost tripped and the wait staff says that happens to them too. We were seated outside, which was ok but they need to add something overhead bc stuff from the trees kept falling into our food. There was no hot water so they had to use a pod coffee maker to heat my water and it was brown… The food was literally okay. Not going again.
