Where we invite you to journey into a place of both intimacy and companionship
Our concept is drawn from our name. The word “cloak” implies secrecy, inspiring our concept of a social sphere humming beneath the levels of ordinary life. “Petal” alludes to the Japanese tradition of “hanami,” when family and friends gather under blooming cherry blossoms to savor food, drinks and fellowship.
Enter our space and travel underground to décor reminiscent of an abandoned Tokyo subway, a stratum of society all its own, an artist’s dream. Cross the threshold into a mystically transformed Japanese social dining lounge which appears to be an outdoor seating area, similar to a waiting platform. Sit beneath a trellis of draping vines and teardrop lights in the intimate space we’ve thoughtfully created, and feast on authentic Japanese sushi, appetizers, small plates and drinks with family and friends.

Food is always good ambience always nice the food just took way too long. Some people waited 20 minutes after one person has gotten theirs. I wanted to order something else to eat, but just didn’t want to wait 20 minutes for it There was like a 20 minute gap between every dish that was placed for one person And once we were finished with our food, and let the server know we were ready for our check. It took another 15-20 minutes to get it. Other than that place is always a crowd pleaser

Food was sub par. Grocery store sushi is better than this place. Garlic edamame was not cooked and lacked flavor. Shishito peppers were also not cooked well. The only thing that didn’t suck was the beer and sake. We left here and ordered door dash….

My only complaint is reservations. We booked the 10 guests one,paid the deposit. We booked a separate one under another name bc we had 15 ppl total. We emailed, phoned (you will get the run around for phone, you can press ANY option and it will take you to the "order online "..) numerous times so the restaurant would know we needed to combine the parties. It would be helpful IF THEY AT LEAST RESPONDED TO EMAILS since we did that multiple times as well. When all was said and done, they did accommodate us, just 30 mins later than our time but it is stressful when you have a large party and you don't know how they will seat you. Great service, shout out to our server especially with such a large group Yuki Onna Roll-⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Kamakaze-⭐️⭐️⭐️ the spice is overwhelming, not in a good way it drowns out the rest of the roll Hadoken Sashimi-⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spicy Garlic Noodles -⭐️⭐️ flat, greasy, unbalanced spice-garlic ratio Drinks- ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️well balanced Great atmosphere

Was really fun! Atmosphere 10/10! We came here for a birthday and brought our own cake and were told that there’s a “cake cutting fee” not sure what that was about. We ended up not even eating it because we were too full but just be aware of that if you bring your own cake.

Was fun to check this place out. We went early like 5:30 dinner on a Saturday night so wasn’t fully poppin yet, I’m sure it turns into a fun vibe. Ambiance was nice, Food was pretty good, n/an alcohol cocktail was interesting. Overall Not sure if we would go again, maybe.

Oh my gosh the food was amazing!! We got some sashimi which could not have been any better and the special roles were mind blowing. Specifically the kraken which honestly just ruins other sushi for me! Can absolutely see where the Michelin star came from! The music was amazing and the decor was super cool, just such a vibey spot! The server was very nice, but she did forget about one thing that we ordered. Overall though it was an amazing place and i highly highly recommend stopping by!

Went here with a group for my birthday and had the best time!! Music was so fun, atmosphere was lively and beautiful, and the food is incredible. They played music and brought out a shot for the birthday girl. Definitely recommend this place for a smaller or larger group. So much fun. Come here!!!

Food was very good. Enjoyed the ribs and the Shibuya Nights roll. We were seated near the front windows. View was okay but the piped music was quite loud. Back of the house would have been preferred.

Overall great experience. Form the music, to the good and the service. Not to mention it is located in a focal point of little Italy which allows you to explore and enjoy the amazing location.

We enjoyed our first experience at Cloak + Petal very much. Upon request, they sat us at one of their best seats in the center of the restaurant, and even brought out a special acknowledgment for our 15 year Valentines together. Having never been here before, I had only heard that it was a place in San Diego that needs to be visited. This is usually wrong. In this instance, however, the recommendation was spot on. I live within walking distance of a great sushi place, and i'll never walk there again because C+P was that much better. If you want attentive servers, a killer motif, 90's hip hop/ R&B softly playing in the background, and sushi that will straighten your curls...there is no better place then Cloak and Petal. Give them all your money.

First time I have been there and it was a wonderful experience. Servers were great and the food was excellent. I recommend the Tokyo Gangster and Shinobi roll.

Excellent service to go with excellent food. Fun atmosphere to enjoy dinner and drinks. I ordered the grilled wild Spanish octopus and it did not disappoint. The octopus was cooked to perfection, I loved how the chorizo mash had a kick of spice to it. Overall flavor reminds me of sweet heat with sweet notes in the beginning and ending with a little kick of spice. Will definitely order it again. The cocktail drinks were excellent and perfectly balanced. I had the born & dayzed along with the tea ceremony. We were undecided on what roll to order and our server highly recommended the bushido roll in which we were very satisfied with. The miso soup was very tasty and comforting since it was a cold night, it hit the spot for warmth. I'll definitely be returning when in San Diego again.

As a sushi enthusiast, I wasn’t impressed with the food quality. I loved the ambience and service was fine. I’m glad I tried this place but wouldn’t go there again.

The chicken fried rice is the worst I’ve ever had in my life and idk what the sauce is on there but never again. Sushi was good tho

What a beautiful display as you walk in. It really sets the tone for your visit. Out reservation was for 5 pm and we arrived a little early and were promptly seated. It was not very busy this Saturday evening yet, but by 5:30 it was pretty packed. We ordered our drinks and appetizer , I had a Diet Coke as I was driving and she had a Red Sun. I tasted it and it was very good. She loved it also. Our appetizer was the Garlic Edamame which came after about 10 minutes. It tasted really good as it had a little sweetness to offset the garlic. We both really enjoyed it, as did our palate For the main course we settled on 4 specialty rolls. 1. The Kamikaze 2. The Bushido 3. The Notorious P.I.G. 4. The Kraken The favorite was The Notorious PIG, Kamikaze, Kraken and Bushido. Not saying anything was bad as they were all very good. If spicy is not your thing then stay away from the Kamikaze as it will fry your mouth. Or just eat a Kamikaze and then have the Bushido or PIG to help with the flame. Overall my girlfriend and I loved this place, loved the food, loved the atmosphere and the service. We will be coming back. Word of note. Show up early to avoid waiting and then allow 10-15 minutes to find parking, or just take public transportation.

Came here for a birthday dinner and had the best time! The vibe is super fun, the service was great, and the food was fantastic! Will absolutely be coming back next time we’re in town and would highly recommend to anyone!

Food was good, not great. Came out fast but everything was super salty. Lychee tres leches came highly recommended and we couldn’t eat it tasted so bad. Solid B

Rice to filling ratio in the sushi perfect so that the rice doesn’t over power the flavors of the roll. Ambience is very cool.
