This was our third try with this restaurant, it apparently gets worse every time! As we approached the entry from the parking, we are greeted at the door by the “smoker’s lounge” (a dirty little corner hole that had make-shift seating) and 3 disgusting people puffing away. I’m not sure if these were even patrons of the restaurant, and I certainly hope these were not employees, completely gross at any rate. Going in, the place is still too dark and creepy (so no remodel, as I was hoping for) and there was no host around. Finally the bartender seats us next to some poor dad with 4 out of control little kids in an area that acted like an echo chamber. Water was poured and the bartender disappears. We sit there for literally 10 minutes, not even seeing anyone who might work there. Finally, we decide to leave, and as we pass the bar on our way out, the same bartender says, “you all have a great evening”, sounding as if he never remembered seating us 10 minute earlier. What the..? Please don’t go here. Maybe it will go away.

Had a 5:30 reservation before a play on a Saturday night. Was asked booth or table and regret not saying booth as we were sat at the worst table in the place while there were still many other open tables. The table was at the entryway to the main dining and my view was to an open stocking room/kitchen entryway. The table was not clean and had crumbs all over it. I also recommend boxing up your food yourself as the waiter threw large chunks of food all over the table and on my purse when boxing up our food. We have gone here for many special occasions in the past and were disappointed to see the atmosphere and staff training decline so much. We will not be back.

Food was not very good and overpriced for what we got. Server did not know the menu well but was very attentive to water refills. Ambiance was nice. Cheesy background music was a little loud for my liking.

Great food. Great place. Great ambience. Good value. Service was spotty, to say the least. Took us more than an hour to get our food. When it came, it was FANTASTIC. But they kept shuffling servers in & out, & no one really had our table. Would definitely do again. Highly recommended Curry Salmon.

We’ve come here for years and I understand sometimes you have an off-night but last night was exceptionally bad. The soup came out cold, as did the edamame, the wait for appetizers and dinner was exceptionally long despite them not being that busy, our waitress was apologetic but didn’t come by the table that often to check in either during the wait for food or during dinner. Seems that the overall experience used to be much better so we’ll probably stick to our default in Hyde Park, Oriental Wok, when we want Chinese in the future. Too bad.

I hate writing negative reviews but this was just an awful experience. We sat down at 6:15 ordered drinks and appetizers. The first appetizers (which were actually our kids dinner) arrived 30 min later and burnt. They then took our entree order. 10 min later we were informed they were out of our third appetizer. 20 min later we were informed they were out of egg rolls (depending on which server you asked they were either out of egg rolls or spring rolls.). We were offered spring rolls instead (after they were carried around the whole restaurant looking for who ordered them) and told we will just take it off the bill (how do you take something that wasn’t ordered off the bill?) At this point we asked to cancel our entrees because we’d been there an hour and only received half the appetizers. Lord knows how much longer the entrees would’ve taken. The chef came out and said both the main and sous chef had called in sick and the kitchen was slammed. I appreciate they were in a tough spot, but if you tell your customers this up front, it’s transparency, if you tell them after they are ready to leave, it’s just an excuse. So all in all we spent $50 for two beers, two orders of burnt potstickers, and an order of bland lo main noodles. Their menu looks quite good, maybe some day I will get to try it. For now it will be a while before my family tries China Gourmet again…at least until this experience is a distant memory.

Refills in drinks were not free no was I told that there weren’t free refills. Took extremely long for food to come. Asked for fried rice with my entree and was told there would be an up charge which I’m fine with. But I was charged for an entree of fried rice and it was plain with no vegetables or anything. I have dined here in the past and have always been extremely pleased with the food and service. It was terrible. The only think I would go back for would be dessert and I would get it as takeout! Two thumbs way down!

We love the China Gourmet. We’ve been going there for 35 years and it never disappoints! We especially love the variety of ways they prepare fish. And their Szechuan green beans are outstanding!

We enjoyed our dinner and we enjoyed our Waiter. Very knowledgeable and extremely attentive. Our reservation was at 6:15, so there was a older crowd and families in the restaurant. The owner stopped by our table to chat and ask us about our experience. Food was good!

Diner beware. Eating at the China Gourmet may cause symptoms of hating all other Chinese restaurants you eat in. All other dishes will fall flat on your tongue with the memory of how the China Gourmet kitchen prepares them. Thanks again CG for a transcendent dinner!

The appetizers were not good, they seemed to be frozen not made fresh lacked flavor. There were several things missing from the menu one of which I wanted. Our dinners were ok very typical of any fast-food Chinese restaurant so wasnt a special or unique experience. The staff was very friendly, helpful, and attentive.

We were so looking forward to dining at the China Gourmet when we came back in town. From start to finish the evening was a disappointment . The service was poor, they were out of 6 entrees, out of the 3 appetizers we wanted only 1 was available, one entree was not prepared or cooked correctly. The bill was incorrect and had to be redone. The revised bill was also incorrect but by then we just wanted to leave. So sad - it used to be a fantastic restaurant.

After dining there multiple times we were disappointed. The service was slow and it was obvious they were short on staff. I’m the past our selections have always been very good. Last night some of our dinners were not up to par. As we’ve been dining there for years we’ll give them another shot - not certain if our guests will be back.

This is a walk back to the 1980s. Basement restaurant that hasn’t been renovated in decades. The best part was the live jazz duo playing some nice songs. ALL of the food was basically inedible. The egg drop soup was SOUR. The duck moo shu was terrible. I would not return.

The service was strange. We had about 5 different servers come to our table and asked the same thing, That was very confusing. My food was without much taste as was my wife’s. We asked not to have rice but a server brought it anyway. There was no receptionist at the front of the house when we arrived and we had to wait several minutes with another couple before someone acknowledged our presence. We did enjoy the piano player. We had not been to China Gourmet since before Covid hit. Our visit then was very positive. Can’t say the same for our latest visit. Would we come or recommend China Gourmet to others? No. When Bing was around, the place was good and always crowded.

The China Gourmet is one of our favorite places to dine! The atmosphere is always relaxing and we tell our friends…‘it’s just swanky!’ Sometimes it’s chill, sometimes it’s lively with jazz but it’s always delicious and the service is impeccable!

The walleye steamed in ginger was excellent! The ambiance was good large variety to choose from! We will go back!

A quiet Tuesday night and wonderful hot and sour soup and the best soft-shell crab I've had since living in Baltimore - all at value pricing well below what I see as the Cincinnati norm for this class of restaurant. I find it surprising that so few of my friends are think of this gem that has been here for over 40 years. Access and easy parking at the rear entrance is a real asset.
