Le dernier de son genre près de la rue 42nd Street, le restaurant Chez Josephine est un petit bijou de quartier fondé en 1986 par Jean-Claude Baker comme un hommage à la légendaire Joséphine Baker. Ce bistrot parisien propose des concerts de piano et un menu alléchant dans un cadre intime avec des murs de velours rouge, une profusion de lustres et un plafond bleu étain. Good was tasty (not mind blowing, but solid)….but portions small for the price. Piano player was great. Wine was yummy. The waiter, a Latino gentleman, was NOT impressive at all. He took our order quickly, but did not follow up, did not refill our wine glasses, didn’t give us updates on the food (it was taking a while) and we had to flag him down for a dessert menu. For the price and ambiance, this guy was a let down. I hope they train him better because I’d like to come back.

Food was wonderful. The service was a bit disjointed. After we were served, no one checked on us and we had to ask for dessert menus. I think it was just an off night for service.

Dinner at eight is great because the theatre crowd has already left, and you receive the best treatment from the charming staff. The bartender (perhaps owner?) was the most gracious and charming gentleman, who went out of his way to make us feel as if we were old friends. And now we are! My sole was delicious and everyone else in my party was delighted. The decor is warm and inviting, and not too dark, so you can actually read the menu and see your food. We were never made to feel rushed. The waiters were cordial and professional, and thankfully waited on us as if we were in their fancy home. The young pianist, named (I think) Levi, was very good, although his last set was not subdued and started to get a bit aggressive and loud. The pianist deserves listening to, but some people would rather not strain to hear each other's conversation. I want to return again and again.

The waitstaff ignored us for a long while and in fact had another customer who arrived after us and served them in a timely manner. We had a show to get to and informed them but we were still constantly ignored. The food was terrible. The pianist was fantastic.

Wait for food was very long. Risotto was chewy and not very flavorful. Escargot is far better at home, in a non French restaurant, in Buffalo. Overpriced for what you receive. Ambience and history are wonderful. My party was happy with their food but I was expecting more.

Jacques and Marie play 9n Saturday nights and they are not to be missed. Chez Josephine is a beautiful, romantic French restaurant. Their Pate is good, their bread is delicious, they make an ice-cold ketel martini, so cold that there are slivers of ice on the top. People are friendly, the clientele is mixed, and Jacques and Marie are wonderful entertainers. Chez Josephine is a favorite.

Birthday. No offer of a birthday dessert. Maitre d a little brusk. Could have been More accommodating. Food fabulous. Beautiful restaurant. Needs a kinder general manager.

Very pretty place- great vibe. French onion soup and duck were outstanding. Salad nicoise was nice- they offered fresh tuna which is unusual but very good. Eggs benedict were ok- nothing special. Pomme Frites were less than average french fries. Service was very good= they asked if we were going to a show and made sure our food was prompt. Drinks were also very good although the french marguarita wasnt really a marguarita.

We always enjoy our dinners at Chez Josephine and tonight’s dinner was no exception. I had the filet Mignon rare and it was just as I expected. Thanks for a nice evening out at dinner.

This might be my favorite restaurant anywhere, and my husband and I travel a lot. Beyond the incredible food and impeccable, friendly service, the atmosphere is so charming and cozy but very relaxed. There's an easy elegance about Chez Josephine I've rarely experienced anywhere. If you're looking for a terrific New York dining experience, this is it!

Outstanding meal after a show! We were greeted and seated promptly. The service was top notch. Very attentive without being intrusive. The food was superb. The piano player was a nice touch. It was a great evening.

Wonderful first-night dinner in NYC. The food was excellent; our server, Ray, was very attentive but not overly so; and the live piano music is delightful. During our meal, Andy, the manager, came over and answered questions about Josephine as well as gave us the background for the origins of the restaurant. We ordered from the Spring Prix Fixe menu and all four of us loved our meal. This is our favorite must-go-to restaurant every time we come. We'll be back on our next NYC!

Celebrating with cousins who came into town to catch some Broadway shows and they loved Chez Josephine for our Sunday Brunch. The ambience is wonderful and the staff were great as well as the cuisine. They had a wonderful songstress/pianist with a mixture of show tunes and standards, which didn't overwhelm the conversation. All in all, a magical experience!

Chez J has long been our choice for reunions with a group of dear friends from out of town. So hospitable, delicious food, wonderful ambiance. They let us sit for 3 hours yesterday — try that anywhere else! We also love the restaurant pre-theatre. So few spots like this remain in NYC. We’re lucky that Chez J continues on. One small quibble yesterday: most of our plates were cleared when one person was still eating. Made that person feel awkward, as though he needed to eat quickly, even though there were plenty of tables available for other diners. That’s never happened before and I hope it won’t happen again.

Duck was a bit dry, could have used something, maybe more sauce. Medium steak was red, not pink. That makes a big difference if you really don’t like red in your meat. Prices are reasonable. Entertainment is lovely. Wine, drinks, dessert, coffee and service are excellent.

Came here for dinner after a show with a group of 7…the food was very good, ambience great, service very good…piano player was fabulous and not too loud..ravioli app was great as was cheese plate though overpriced,, crab cake was good not amazing, for mains the lobster cassoulet was really great as were the tbone steak, sea bass, etc…dessert was mixed review, basically $15 for each small portion, worst was the black and white mousse, the choc half was ok, the white was kinda yucky, I would drop the white and improve the chocolate…however the chocolate bomb prailinee was very very good…no complaints from crème brûlée options other than small size of the one with sorbet…overall I gave it 4+ stars instead of near 5 because I can’t get past $8 diet cokes that were mini sized (no joke)

We very much enjoyed our evening, with a very good trio and vocalist doing French-leaning chansons and jazz from Baker’s time. The warm old-school environment was charming. Everyone should go - a unique experience!
