Located in the Sorrento Valley, California English is the newest culinary creation from celebrity chef, Richard Blais. Blais is creating an all-day menu for California English that’ll interpret classic British dishes through the lens of Southern California ingredients.
The idea is a fusion of sorts: the laid-back California lifestyle that makes San Diego so unique, mixed with a cozy pub convivial atmosphere where you can meet friends (or mates) for a pint after work, set up a client lunch with fresh oysters on the menu or have a cozy family dinner over a Sunday roast. Everything on the menu is made from scratch with locally sourced ingredients that make for fresh and flavorful dishes.
The effortless vibe of casual yet stylish makes for the perfect place to celebrate the joy of the unexpected coming together to make the perfect culinary match.

Don’t come here for tea. The service was not good…servers were practically nonexistent when we needed them. And the food was not much better. Scones were blah, tea sandwiches were strange…and not in a good way. Egg salad was bland, chicken salad was forgettable, fig jam was lackluster and the marmalade was bitter beyond belief. The only shining light was the apple crostata, even though the school of ice cream that accompanied it was almost nonexistent. And that wasn’t even part of the tea. Ambience was super cute though, but not at all worth going back for. Hopefully their regular food is better than their tea service.

Food was not quality and they only give you one cup of tea with tea time. They gave us watered down tea the rest of the time. Servers were not attentive and some cases rude.

First time at California English...loved the muted greens and plants everywhere, big wide windows so lots of light AND padded seats (no wooden or metal planks, thank you so much!) Also plenty space between tables so no forced auditing of others' conversations. YAY We both had crispy fish tacos which we were told had the same coating as their famous $29 fish & chips! The piece of cod in each taco was large, beautifully crispy; wished the slaw on it was more saucy. It was pretty dry and hard to keep in the taco. The extra order of chips (3 days of prep we were told) were the really large spears of potato--very soft inside and crisp on the outside. If you like really big "chips" then these are great. I like thinner with a chance to get more crisp to the bite. The kale slaw also seemed to have so little dressing that it was pretty dry. Thankfully they did prepare the kale by removing all ribs, unlike so many restaurants. Server was great...we would go back & try other things:)

We had a lovely time at tea. Chris was able to get us fish and chips even though lunch service ends at three. We would recommend California Teahouse for a special occasion or anyone just wanting a reminder of lunch across the pond.

What a disappointment! This is not your customary English tea experience but more of a confused, ‘let’s get some clientele into the place on a Sunday when the tech industry employees are at home’! Never, ever should an English tea experience serve up a tea bag. Whatever happened to the loose leaf tea? Let’s also talk about the fact the tea cup isn’t a china tea cup but a small thick ceramic mug. Sandwiches were boring and the bread dry at the edges. Scones were in-fact mini scones. Don’t bother wearing your pretty Sunday best clothes as there is no traditional tea experience to be had there. Dismal experience hands down. Richard Blais- have you outsourced this to a third party between 3pm - 5pm on Sundays? If so, go check it out and disassociate your name with it immediately. You are disappointing your fan base.

Ambiance of the restaurant was clean, welcoming, almost fairytale like:) Everyone greeted us:) Service at the table was very slow even though it was not crowded at all and no one checked in on us for gaps of time. Food and presentation were good. We had the brunch service:)

I went for afternoon tea service. The tea was served luke warm and the bread used for the tea sandwiches was slightly stale on the outside. I think they have the tea sandwiches prepped ahead of time rather than to order, which is probably the issue. Great decor in the restaurant, but tea service needs a little improving.

Pros: Beautiful ambiance, easy-to-find parking, great location, fun cocktails, price wise - lower end for tea experiences Cons: Service was subpar, sat for ~10min without even water before someone finally touched table; the food was nothing to rave about - found it to be dry, and at one point, the chicken and tuna in the sandwiches rolled out of the bread; small portions (maybe comparable to price?); had to constantly seek out our server for spoons, tea refills, cream/sugar; tea itself was good but was a little disappointed to see the teas are something you could order online anytime Overall, would say this place is good if you are new to the tea experience or are coming for a different experience.

We went for tea. It was very enjoyable and I would do it again. The only negative was that the sandwiches, while tasty, were super small portions. The sweets were plentiful. I would have preferred a better sandwich to sweets ratio.

The dining experience was excellent. Comfortable, chic. The service was decent- could have been better, but wasn’t terrible. Food was just okay. The expectations we had were not met. The risotto wasn’t cooked fully, and the value for what we received was underwhelming. Might go back and try something different to give it another shot.

I went for afternoon tea for two and compared to other places where I’ve been for tea, I feel like California English offers too many of the same desserts. For example, there were three desserts, but there were four of each dessert for a total of 12 servings in addition to the custard cup. I also would have liked more savory options besides four of the same scone. The finger sandwiches were good.

Excellent food and wonderful service. Selena was amazing. Will be back. We come to town to spend the day at the VA Hospital for appts. quite often. Our hotel is down from the restaurant. Great hidden gem.

Fish and chips and crispy Brussels sprouts were elevated and delicious. The hamburger missed the grilled taste we were craving but short ribs were excellent. Definitely returning!

Beautiful restaurant. I have hosted guests there four times for lunch and each was impressed with the menu and ambience. Staff are very friendly and efficient. The atmosphere is pleasant and relaxed.

Came here to celebrate two girlfriends birthdays. Wonderful tea experience. $35 includes your choice of tea, 3 petite sandwiches, 2 scones and a wonderful assortment of sweets with clotted cream and fig or marmalade jam. It’s a LOT of food and possibly too many sweets. We do wish there was a bit more savory and less sweet but it was delicious nonetheless. Service was amazing! The fish and chips looked amazing so will have to come back for that. They do have a regular menu so if you want to do tea at a time other than their standard 3-5 pm just ask and they can likely accommodate you. Wonderful experience.

Went for happy hour. Prices and choices were really good. Drinks were absolutely delicious. I tried several appetizers, the hot scotch egg, the pear walnut toast and the brussel sprouts. I’d definitely have the brussel sprouts again. I was a little disappointed by the pear toast, it was missing something in my opinion and seemed too bland. Dinner consisted of the mushroom kale risotto and cheddar scones. The scones were flavorful and buttery. While the risotto was tasty it was a little too al dente for my taste which seem to give less depth.

We went for the afternoon tea - it was a let down. The whole package was a bit basic - the tea was the best part, the scones tasted strange and the desserts were substandard. The sandwiches were ok, could make better at home. Coming from England, you get better from your local supermarket for 1/20th the price.

Went for afternoon tea. Sandwiches had stale bread and were cold so were not fresh. Each person got an individual small pot of tea with one tea bag. When asked for an additional tea bag was told the charge was $5. The space is very nice and inviting. Might go back to try brunch but would not recommend for afternoon tea. It was very disappointing.

the tea time was lovely. the tea was perfect, the California tea tower was delicious. my husband wanted to order a small bite from the regular menu, but we were told that was not possible. however, the table next to us were given a full menu and ordered many dishes from the dinner from it.

We went for "high tea" which was fun, but the mood was broken by the inevitable monotonous music like you hear at any other restaurant these days. They really should have something special for the Tea Time. English bands? The California Tower and English Tower were good, but the ratio of savory to sweet was off. Too much sweet, not enough savory. A fun novelty, not something I'd go back for.

We had a lovely experience during their Tea Time, they provide you enough food to be quite full! We even had to take a couple pastries home. I would recommend the English tower more, the sandwiches of the California were slightly disappointing, esp the apple cheddar one. The restaurant is so cute and there is no trouble parking, which is such a win in SD! Great value, definitely would come again.

Afternoon tea:Tea choices limited and only teabags in a teapot ( without tea cozy), so the tea got cold pretty fast. Ordered the California Tower: 3 kinds of sandwiches but all the bread were on the dry side and cold, scones were cold. One of the jam was very watery, the fig base one was really nice. Lemon posset only offered in one container, that was the best of the sweet offerings, the rest was not memorable.
