Located in the Sorrento Valley, California English is the newest culinary creation from celebrity chef, Richard Blais. Blais is creating an all-day menu for California English that’ll interpret classic British dishes through the lens of Southern California ingredients.
The idea is a fusion of sorts: the laid-back California lifestyle that makes San Diego so unique, mixed with a cozy pub convivial atmosphere where you can meet friends (or mates) for a pint after work, set up a client lunch with fresh oysters on the menu or have a cozy family dinner over a Sunday roast. Everything on the menu is made from scratch with locally sourced ingredients that make for fresh and flavorful dishes.
The effortless vibe of casual yet stylish makes for the perfect place to celebrate the joy of the unexpected coming together to make the perfect culinary match.

During my meal I over heard what appeared to be a manager or owner speaking with another patron about plans to change the restaurant in regards to streamlining service and improving the menu. By the end of my meal I could easily understand why both of those things required improvements and I wish them the best in making those necessary changes. The service was non existent and the food is forgettable at best.

The afternoon tea was a joke. The tea pot is the typical Chinese restaurant type tea pot. Tea was using a ‘tea bag’ not loose leaves. Scone was dry and not even a tiny bit of warm in temperature. sandwich bread was stale. Battenberg cake was dry and the icing was way too sweet. I observed 90% of the diners were be able to finish the food, this tell something. Very disappointed when the restaurant serves English cuisine also offers afternoon tea, I expect it will be a decent one, when the server put down the tea pot I knew it wasn’t gonna be good. We will not go back or recommend anyone to try.

A quirky "English-themed" restaurant in the middle of an office park is how I would describe this unusual eatery. Having spent time in the UK, I can say that the food is nothing like anything you would get there, in a pub or otherwise. It's like a strange twist to familiar items, but not necessarily in a bad way. Overall, the food was good, and the service was attentive (except when the decaf cappuccino failed to materialize, but they redeemed themselves by comping this item). They have an afternoon tea, which should be interesting for how they might transform the standard tea items. This was a good dining experience, and I would return here for another meal.

Fantastic time, got the best table, dantastic service from Gus and the (felt like) the entire resturant! a greqt spot for lunch, casual meetings! and definitely go with the “Fog” libation, tacos or fish n chips!!

Don’t come here for tea. The service was not good…servers were practically nonexistent when we needed them. And the food was not much better. Scones were blah, tea sandwiches were strange…and not in a good way. Egg salad was bland, chicken salad was forgettable, fig jam was lackluster and the marmalade was bitter beyond belief. The only shining light was the apple crostata, even though the school of ice cream that accompanied it was almost nonexistent. And that wasn’t even part of the tea. Ambience was super cute though, but not at all worth going back for. Hopefully their regular food is better than their tea service.

Food was not quality and they only give you one cup of tea with tea time. They gave us watered down tea the rest of the time. Servers were not attentive and some cases rude.

First time at California English...loved the muted greens and plants everywhere, big wide windows so lots of light AND padded seats (no wooden or metal planks, thank you so much!) Also plenty space between tables so no forced auditing of others' conversations. YAY We both had crispy fish tacos which we were told had the same coating as their famous $29 fish & chips! The piece of cod in each taco was large, beautifully crispy; wished the slaw on it was more saucy. It was pretty dry and hard to keep in the taco. The extra order of chips (3 days of prep we were told) were the really large spears of potato--very soft inside and crisp on the outside. If you like really big "chips" then these are great. I like thinner with a chance to get more crisp to the bite. The kale slaw also seemed to have so little dressing that it was pretty dry. Thankfully they did prepare the kale by removing all ribs, unlike so many restaurants. Server was great...we would go back & try other things:)

We had a lovely time at tea. Chris was able to get us fish and chips even though lunch service ends at three. We would recommend California Teahouse for a special occasion or anyone just wanting a reminder of lunch across the pond.

What a disappointment! This is not your customary English tea experience but more of a confused, ‘let’s get some clientele into the place on a Sunday when the tech industry employees are at home’! Never, ever should an English tea experience serve up a tea bag. Whatever happened to the loose leaf tea? Let’s also talk about the fact the tea cup isn’t a china tea cup but a small thick ceramic mug. Sandwiches were boring and the bread dry at the edges. Scones were in-fact mini scones. Don’t bother wearing your pretty Sunday best clothes as there is no traditional tea experience to be had there. Dismal experience hands down. Richard Blais- have you outsourced this to a third party between 3pm - 5pm on Sundays? If so, go check it out and disassociate your name with it immediately. You are disappointing your fan base.
