We're proud of our history without being complacent and we love to see a happy customer. We've always focused on making our pub unique and we are sure you will notice. So pull up a seat, take a tour round our pub and discover what sets us apart from the rest.

** Please note all bookings are for our restaurant, we offer first come first served for drinks in our bar area.

*** Please note due to licencing restrictions under 18's are not permitted in the main bar, we can seat under 18's and over 5's in the restaurant for dining. We cannot allow under 18's in the restaurant after 10pm.

**** As we are a listed building we do not have Accessible toilets on the ground floor.

What a gem of a place this is - lovely to see somewhere steeped in history. Despite being very busy the staff were lovely and looked after us well. The food was delicious- I had venison, which was melt in the mouth. Highly recommended, I will definitely return

This is a wonderful place to visit, and the food and service are fantastic. A real gem of an old fashioned pub, and beautifully preserved. The restaurant area is really special and the food was superb. I can't wait to visit again.

This place never disappoints and this time was no exception. John (Joey from Friends) was absolutely fabulous and made our evening. We had the mussels again and they were perfect, as always. Thank you for a wonderful experience once again.

The overall ambiance was what we expected. However the full lobster was 4 bites of meat, undercooked and just not good, for the price it wasn’t worth it. Fish and chips were good, drinks were ok. I think if you stick with basics it may be better. Also bathrooms were not in good shape.

I had a reservation for 8:45pm to celebrate my birthday. I arrived at 8:30 and was told the table would be ready closer to 8:45. I waited at the bar and returned at 8:45 to be told my table wasn't ready still. Another party of 3 was seated and then a very rude man came out to tell me the restaurant had to shut due to a clogged toilet. I told him it was my birthday and he said it was health and safety. Yet the other party of 3 continued to stay seated. I said again it's my birthday and you're not listening to me. There was no apology or offer to rebook or a drink. Nothing. My money spends just as well as others and I will happily spend it elsewhere. As a travel trade professional who just attended Visit Scotland's conference in Aberdeen, this was a poor example of Scottish hospitality and I will be sure to share my experience with my colleagues and clients.

Found everything just as super as ever. Cannot fault any aspect of our visit. Cafe Royal never disappoints, regardless of what time of day we visit.

Food was good but we were disappointed not to be able to have teas and coffees after our meal. Surely someone could have gone and bought a kettle!

Food was very good however we were served poor coffee and were also given cream to go with the coffee that had clearly gone off. This was changed but this really shouldn't have happened.

The service and surroundings were lovely. Had a good selection of wines by the glass. We chose a super wine. The food took a long time to arrive - an hour for a lunch main course. When it arrived, the chicken dish was enjoyable but the fish was overcooked and disappointing.

Steak sandwiches had cold steak. Battered haddock over-battered and not much fish inside. Chips were poor. Food took a long time being served.

We collected friends from Waverley train station and managed to get a car park nearby. So the café was a perfect introduction to Edinburgh. The service and food was high standards and did not disappoint.

Never fails. Great bar, nice restaurant end. Great food, kind and friendly staff. Seen as we travel from Newcastle for lunch says it all really.

We arrived for lunch and greeted, shown to our Table. Food Fabulous, staff attentive without being overbearing. Only gripe was it was a bit cold inside with a few guests still wearing their jackets! That’s the only thing stopping a 5star review.

The bar is perfect, atmosphere very good. The “restaurant” was a big disapointment. We booked a table weeks before our arrival. We had high expectations. The waitor spilled water on my daugther and suggested her to go to the restroom to dry. She spilled half of our just bought bottle, and she did not bring a new one. The food was very expensive and very mediocre. The staff was clumsy and we didn’t feel very welcome. Despite our experience the room was very beautiful and special.

The food was solid, as always, nothing remarkable but good-sized portions (unless you have the fish pie... remember to get sides). However service, sadly, lets the overall experience down. A far from warm welcome, an age waiting to get drinks and then at teh end suddenly being huckled out the door for the next booking, despite the delays not being at our end. It would have been easy enough to say earlier in the meal when the table needed to be turned - not come flying over and say we are now receiving our bill as a table has been waiting in the bar (!) Understaffed and stretched or just disengaged staff it was hard to tell, but when you are dropping close to £300 you expect to leave with more positive memories.

The evening at Cafe Royal was one of the highlights of our visit. The seafood was outstanding, and the staff and service impeccable. A must visit location, even if just to the bar/pub side, and on our forever list of places to eat.

A shadow of its former self. Such a pity. Booked because last year it was excellent. Restaurant isn’t anything like I remember. Won’t be back

Arrived in good time. Reception not particularly welcome but shown to table in good time. We were sat at the far end next to a particularly loud table and continued to be loud throughout our time there. I ordered the Venison as it was one of not many gluten free dishes that I would like unfortunately they had none left. Second choice was the Pork which was served 45mins later, it was tough to eat and almost tasteless. Our Bill came to around £60 for two main dishes, a side of chips and a glass of red wine. Not impressed!

We arrived at our requested time and shown to our table in the restaurant, we were also offered a table in the bar. The staff and service was excellent. We have been many times before mainly for drinks and nibbles. We decided to have lunch and were not disappointed.

Sehr netter und freundlicher Service. Die Atmosphäre und Ambiente ist wirklich klasse. Riesige Auswahl an Getränke und Getränken und Whiskys. Das Essen war sehr gut. Allerdings waren zwei Burger zu trocken und wurden zurückgegeben.

Cafe Royal is still a very special place, and is still delivering food with a level of true excellence. Thank you to all the staff who helped us celebrate my mums 88th Birthday….. she loves it there.

We had a late evening booking but Cafe Royal was busy busy and noisy noisy. BUT have to say our waiter was excellent. Good sense of humour, very efficient and helpfull. Menu choice was a limited limited and two or three choices were finished but what we chose was great.

Loved it. Table for 2 in the Oyster place, so slightly quieter than the main bar area. Service was spot on. Menu is pretty good. Quality of food superb. Wine great but pricey. Ambience was lovely, mirrors on walls help give illusion of space. Recommended.
