Welcome to Ukiah Japanese Smokehouse, where Japanese Soul Food meets American BBQ by James Beard Nominated Michael Lewis. “Japanese Smokehouse” is defined as merging Japanese ingredients and flavors with American BBQ techniques, and everything in between.

Menu highlights include light and refreshing dishes such as Wagyu Tataki with house kimchee, yuzu kosho and savory soy or Tuna Sashimi with yuzu sabayon + furikake, to bolder flavors such as Smoked Pastrami Short Rib
with toasted rye, fire roasted kimchi + yuzu pickles or the Duck Hot Pot, duck dumplings, smoked shoyu broth + shrooms. We are open 7 days a week, for Dinner and Sunday Brunch!

Please note, our dining room consists of booths, regular tables and high-tops. We will try our best to accommodate you at your prefer location, but sometimes it is not possible due to party size. Our outdoor tables can be requested but not guaranteed when booking on open table.

    I love the concept behind the restaurant. The menu is really interesting, our server was fantastic in providing knowledge and guidance on the menu selections as well as having the perfect demeanor for what she does. The dishes came out of the kitchen speedily. The Waygu and Sea bass were undoubtedly the best things we had from the menu. We also sampled the shishito peppers, crispy shrimp, crispy hamachi and mushrooms. Those dishes were ok. The hamachi needed something else to brighten the fish, the shrimp was a little heavy, the shishito peppers were very scarce as were most of the dishes. Cocktails were just ok. For these reasons I rated our experience as fair. Perhaps if we had ordered from the smokehouse or raw options my impression would have been more favorable. But at $100 pp I expected more from the food.

    All dishes were excellent. Waiter was very helpful interpreting the menu and clarifying portion size. The Negroni, with The Chemist (local) gin, was excellent.

    First time at Ukiah. Fantastic experience. Food was delicious. From the baratta salad with yuzu marmalade to the smoked baby back ribs everything we tried was great. Will now become one our must stops when we visit Asheville again.

    One of our best meals ever! Great service and even better food! From the spicy shrimp, to the smoked brisket, to the coconut cake and more everything was outstanding. Our best meal in Asheville, by far! Highly recommended!
