Beneath the pulsing city lies a hidden dining destination. USDA Prime steaks from the finest Black Angus cattle. Bespoke cocktails. A restored Bank Vault from the 1930s. This is Butcher & Banker, a new "steakeasy" at the crossroads of Penn Station, Madison Square Garden, Javits Center and Hudson Yards.

Butcher & Banker is no ordinary steakhouse. A dozen different steaks are on offer, but non-steak eaters will dine exceedingly well here.

Butcher & Banker pays homage to the New Yorker Hotel’s storied history. The New Yorker opened in 1930 at the height of the Great Depression as the then largest hotel in the city. It has attracted a who’s who of entertainers and dignitaries from around the world, including Muhammad Ali, JFK, Joan Crawford and Nikola Tesla.

Beneath the hotel, a bank vault and offices were occupied by the Manufacturers Trust Company until 1980. With the opening of Butcher & Banker, the public can see the vault for the first time in 37 years.

I've never eaten dinner in a bank vault before, but I've now done it once, and it's clear to me that I will do so again. The food here was quite good (I had the rib-eye and my colleague had the pork), the service was attentive without being overbearing, and the ambient sound level was comfortable. I will be back.

The restaurant came highly recommended by a very nice representative at our AC Hotel. We enjoyed the food and ambiance of the restaurant, but our server Ceja left a whole lot to be desired as far as his attentiveness and friendliness for our table in particular. He seemed like he was having a bad day but then I noticed he could show friendliness and attentiveness to the patrons of his racial persuasion 😳. He not once inquired how our meal was or if we needed anything else once our food was served to our table. I expected that given the prices we paid for our meal, we could’ve been treated much better. I will not be referring others to B&B as a result of this service experience although the food was absolutely delicious! Service and the meal is everything to me when I patronize a fine dining establishment. While the chef did his part excellently, Ceja missed the mark in his service and treatment of my sisters and I. He blemished the ending of our sisters trip and birthday celebrations.

A great romantic steak and seafood restaurant. The bank vault makes this restaurant unique.

Disappointing. The oysters Rockefeller are fried, which was so disgusting we did not finish them. The rest of the food was just ok. If you are not sitting in or immediately next to the vault, then it is just another average restaurant. Mediocre food and ambience at a five star price.

The waiter was terrible and rude. Didnt take our order when we said we were ready. And after we ate, we found out one of the main dishes didnt get ordered. And he didn’t even apologize. Next morning, we all felt stomach sick from the food as well. Don’t go there

The food was incredibly okay. They charge steakhouse prices but the food is just okay. There are a million better steakhouses than this one in nyc. Also, both my girlfriend and I got extremely sick after dinner. The staff are somewhat nice, but the waiter was very obviously trying to upcharge us, asking 3 or 4 times if we wanted another drink while we still hadn’t finished our first. Do not recommend, it is a terrible value and not tasty.
