Nestled in the heart of Budds Beach (only a 5 minute walk from the heart of Surfers Paradise) Bumbles Cafe is many things to many people. For residents of the Gold Coast, Bumbles is the café where they religiously visit each morning: grab the morning paper, nod to the barista signaling “the usual”, and plant themselves in their favorite seat amongst other regulars.

Bumbles has become an extension of their own homes and kitchens. For other locals, it is where they come every weekend to meet a group of friends and have a catch-up while they tuck into their breakfast of salmon benedict, side of hash browns & freshly squeezed juice. Others arrive by jetski on the beach and grab a take-away lunch to enjoy later.

The Benedict Conundrum

IN 1894, Lemuel Benedict, a wall street broker, who was suffering from a hangover, ordered some buttered toast, crisp bacon, two poached eggs and a hooker of hollandaise sauce at the Waldorf Hotel in New York. Over the past 30 years we have served it every way imaginable recently we served the 2 poached eggs on half a bagel with bacon avocado and hollandaise, our most popular version ever, however we did get some complaints on trip advisor that there was only half a bagel, so we took the advice and served both halves would you believe nobody ate the second half so we are back to half a bagel. If you want the other half tell us and we will give it to you here are our 4 favourite versions

It is a lovely atmosphere if you are seated in the right area, I booked online for 4 people after trying to ring twice and couldn’t get through. I also put in the note section of my online booking that we had an elderly lady with us. Unfortunately, when we arrived, we were told that they were very busy, I said that I had a booking but the girl said (in an exasperated way) that doesn’t matter but I’ll try to see if I can find you a table. We were put out the back and forgotten until my friend went to find someone. So, I don’t recommend booking online as it didn’t work for us unfortunately.

Great spot, would definitely book before hand. Took a while for orders to come out, but they are super busy. Love all the different spaces in the place. Can have dogs outside.

Waitress seemed to not want to be there. Maybe being Mothers Day she didn’t. Asked for 2 items to come as an entree but arrived with meals. Rec’d 2 burgers first then waited another 15 mins for remaining food so we could eat together. $5.50 for 18 fries. When I asked for the entree to come first to the waiter delivering the burgers (different to who took order) didn’t even listen to me when I was talking. Then my 16 yr old asked again. This was ignored. The Thai Infused Salad seemed like left overs from day before. Cucumber soggy. Was served half a cherry tomato in salad. No coriander in salad. Loads of chicken though but hardly any vege. Was like it was end of weekend so got the scraps. Didn’t end up finishing it. Thai salads are known to be leafy, fresh, pungent with herbs but this was soaked shredded chicken and that was about it. Prosecco was nice. Karate chicken burger was great - my daughter offered me bites of hers as the ‘salad’ was terrible. My sleeves of dress stuck to the table (seemed to be wood that was lacquered needing a good scrub) Wait staff carried filthy dripping bathroom mop past our table. Went to bathroom later and floor was very dangerously wet. Complained about salad and was offered something else but could tell at 1:45pm place was nearing to close and lots of cleaning started around us so thanked head waitress and declined. She ended up offering the salads for free which I appreciated. My daughters were quite upset for me (being Mother’s Day) because one said we would’ve been better off making our own with a bag of precut coleslaw, shredded bbq chicken and soy sauce! She was right. So glad we didn’t pay $28 x 2 for this. So compensation was appreciated. Booked Bumbles as had a wonderful time there for breakfast with friends. Food was amazing. Just think Sunday lunch this is not the place to go to. Seems to be a breakfast place NOT lunch. Plus the staff seem to be back packers, don’t care with an attitude like we are below them.

Upon arrival we were moved inside which was warmer and dryer. That is where the good times finished. Hi Tea, did not happen due to the fact that it was not pre-paid. The person we spoke to said that they had called everyday but I had no missed calls or messages. So, I accepted the fact that there was no Hi Tea. The waitress then came to take our order, no smile and did not seem happy to be at work. Drinks took forever and my daughters long black was so strong she couldn't drink it. Brunch, my French Toast was so dry and tasteless it was barely edible. The FAT was delicious, and the toasted sandwich was ok. The wait staff were run off their feet, so service was not great to non-existent. We were not offered water or more drinks or even asked how our meals were. Sorry, I won't be going back.

I had been to Bumbles many times before this visit hence why I chose it to celebrate Mothers Day. Even though I had booked well in advance we were seated in the Blue House in the door way (cool breeze). It took at least 20 mins before our drink order was taken. The 2 cool drinks came out within 15-20mins but the hot drinks took another 15 or so mins. We eventually got our food at least an hour after being seated. I totally understand it was a busy day however we have visited many times and have never had an issue with long wait times. Our table wasn’t cleared, there was nothing (glasses or bottles) available at the self-serve water station and it appeared there was only on person working in the Blue House. I am hoping this was just a one off.

The ambiance and coffee were beautiful but the service, food and value for money were awful. We booked a high tea the day before Mothers Day - one regular, one vegetarian and one vegan high tea. The regular was fine, the vegetarian was fine but the vegan was embarrassing. It was $69 ($10 MORE than regular) and she was given two sweet brownie bites, three finger sandwiches and fruit on skewers in a large (and mostly empty) tiered tray. An absolute after thought. The server lacked knowledge and was unhelpful. Luckily the decorations and coffee were amazing otherwise we would have left.

Our ladies group meets at Bumbles monthly. There is no where on the Gold Coast with better ambience and location.

Service was pretty non existent to be honest , Not very engaging , and didn't know wines . Have been before and it was great - maybe time to get some new staff guys that wish be there
