I called the day before to inform them it was my girlfriend's birthday, hoping for a special touch like writing a message in chocolate on a plate. However, they mentioned a possible extra charge for this, which surprised me as I've never encountered such fees elsewhere. Upon arrival, there was a small acknowledgment of my girlfriend's birthday, but no further details about our booking were provided. The restaurant was empty when we arrived, and the manager mentioned needing to consult the chef about preparing the afternoon tea, indicating there might be a wait. This was not the level of service I expected, especially considering the price. Despite the pleasant weather, we were disappointed with the quality of the food. The afternoon tea arrived surprisingly quickly, but it failed to impress. All the cakes seemed store-bought, and the sandwiches had a crustiness that suggested they weren't freshly made. Additionally, when we requested to swap our hot beverages for cold ones due to the heat, we were informed there would be an extra charge. Consequently, we settled for coffee, but even then, we were never offered refills throughout our visit. Overall, our experience was underwhelming, and I wouldn't recommend or revisit this place, despite its charming setting.

This is without a doubt the worst dining experience I’ve ever had at any hotel I’ve stayed in! The first warning should’ve been when we arrived and there was hardly anyone else dining at 8.30 on a Friday evening of a bank holiday weekend! It was then announced that they were doing a small plates service and it was 4 for 3, there were 3 of us so we decided to order 8 small plates and 2 sides of sweet potato fries, The first issue was that they had run out of the trio of mini burgers - how is that even possible for such a basic item, then they had run out of smoked ham hock- apparently they’d been very busy during the day - I absolutely do not believe this as I never once saw the restaurant busy not even at breakfast! One of the dishes we ordered was gnocchi which came out no more than luke warm, some of the sweet potato fries were not cooked all the way through and were soggy not crispy, the chicken wings were so covered in chilli flakes that you couldn’t taste anything, we like spice but equally we like to be able to taste the food! My summary (and I’m no expert although I do cook for my family every day) is that they don’t employ a chef in the evening just someone to heat up pre-cooked dishes which they couldn’t even manage to do properly! If you stay at the hotel do yourself a favour and take a 5 minute walk into town and go to a proper restaurant! We paid £84 for the most shocking effort of food I’ve come across - we eat out regularly, we’re not particularly fussy, no allergies, etc and we don’t mind paying for a decent meal - we enjoy the whole dining experience but this most definitely wasn’t it. There were only 2 staff members one in the kitchen and one front of house, both pleasant enough but neither seemed very capable or interested!! Sorry to say not only would I not recommend eating in this restaurant but due to our experience I would not recommend anyone staying at the hotel and I certainly won’t be again!
