We are plant-based eaters and they had plenty of delicious options. The cocktails were great, the service was great, live music was fun, and I would highly recommend this place.

Even with the loud music, it’s still good to have conversation, I’m super happy with the DJ incredibly happy with the food. Highly recommended restaurant really should be five stars.

We tried out Books & Records new happy hour, spoiler alert it was great. The restaurant is beautiful, staff very professional and friendly, and food great. Happy hour deals are some of the best in the city. Standout food was fried chicken bao buns, tempura mushrooms, salad, mac & cheese…… Two of us with a lot of food & two drinks was a bargain @ 50% of a typical bill. Live music started @ 7pm

Nice ambiance and good,attentive service but salad was rough, soggy with too much dressing and small pebbles that maybe were meaty pebbles or maybe nutty pebbles?, either way break-a-tooth risk was high. $60 for carnitas (even if duck) is also a bit nutty. Tortillas were 4x thicker than need be, maybe an artistic choice but too thick to make a taco with our $60 meat. There were some positives but we won’t be back.

Loved the food here / the artichoke salad was the bomb! Really liked the trout with grilled pineapple too. Music was nice but the noise level was so high in the restaurant that it wasn’t so easy to hear. Think sitting outside might have been better for the music. But overall loved the place! Will definitely go back!

I came here for a bday brunch with 7 of my girlfriends, and we had a great time. The food was excellent, and when it got too warm, they opened the windows for us right away. They didn't rush us at all, which was really nice because we kept ordering drinks and catching up. I highly recommend the "Coffee + TV" drink. The short rib hash and duck benedict were AMAZING and DELICIOUS! We enjoyed the live jazz music; it got a little hard to hear each other at the table at times, but overall, it was a good experience.

We are frequent diners of Books & Records. It is one of our neighborhood favs. Great food, vibe, cocktails, and music. Our only request is that they either expand or rotate the menu more frequently. We’ve had everything 3-4 times and would love to try something new. And if you don’t like certain ingredients, your choices are very limited. Otherwise, highly recommend.

Really great service! Very good food although a little pricey. Live music is a really nice touch. Duck carnitas were very tasty as was the artichoke salad.

I love this place and there are several reasons why: 1) They have a lot of vegetarian/vegan options 2) The flavors of the food is out of this world, unique combinations that are impeccably designed 3) service: all of the staff have amazing customer service, not missing any details (rare these days) 4) Ambiance: the decor is a fun festive touch with books and record placed in various places. Additionally, the live jazz music adds a special touch. The gold cutlery is very relevant and current Overall, this has become one of my fav spots in San Diego. I highly recommend making reservations as it does get busy.

Great experience - server (Dalton) was fantastic and the food a had a great flare. Don’t miss out on the black key lime pie or the lava cake for dessert! Live vinyl DJ was great (although we would have preferred a little lower volume so we could talk with ease on a Sunday pm). Will definitely return!

Sunday Brunch with live music was great. The service was professional and the food was delicious and came out quickly. The dining room is small and tables are fairly close together, but it is tastefully decorated in a mid-century modern way. The upper seating area near the bar is open and is a little louder with the music.

While the ambience is very cool, there are a few service hiccups that detracted from the experience. The host/hostess operation was sub par leading to a 1/2 hour delay and then awkward walk to a table, then no, e can’t seat you here. It was chaotic. The bartenders were excellent but seemed miserable. The first words from one was “give me your credit card”. And another carded my 23 year old daughter, made a face doubting her id and proceeded to serve her 2 mixed drinks with no alcohol in them. The food was both good and average and the service fine. We liked the live music a lot. That was a highlight. Overall , I would go for the ambience but the food and service was average.

As another reviewer said, good but not great. The artichoke and spinach salad tasted delicious, but there were small, very hard crunchy things in it, and my friend and I were both worried we were going to break a tooth. The broccoli was supposed to be charred, but was definitely not charred and somewhat undercooked imo. The crudo and the mushroom bucatini were both very good and the service was also very good. The music and acoustics were way loud. Would go back, but wouldn't rush back. I'm kind of over spending over $200 on a meal for two and being underwhelmed. Kind of the standard for San Diego in general these days.

Loved it and will definitely be back :) went on a Sunday morning around 11am. They had a live jazz band playing. Only thing I didn’t really care for was being seated as a couple literally right next to another two top. There wasn’t much space in between us so it felt a little crammed, otherwise great place!

Books + Records is great date night vibe or even a check in with friends. Parking can be nerve wracking in Bankers Hill but luckily weekdays after 6 isn't too difficult to find a spot nearby. The venue is a fantastic and moody space. A lot of detail was put in down to the service. Our server, Pasha, was very attentive in a pretty chaotic space. Drinks were wonderfully crafted. I was saddened to only try one drink as my boyfriend and I did have to head out to another location! The appetizers we did have were filled with flavor and came out beautifully presented. The only item that certainly could be suggested for improvement is the order time on dishes. It was nearly 30-40 minutes after the plates arrived and we had not ordered any main entree, so it was a bit surprising. Otherwise, not a deterrent. I enjoyed this neighborhood space and can only see myself coming back in the near future!

Service and ambiance were outstanding!! Drinks: 10/10. Had a mocktail (lemongrass) and old fashion. Food: The mushrooms were a little too salty 5/10. The salad was good but drenched in dressing, making the vinegar really stand out 6/10. The squid ink pasta was delicious 10/10.

Went for Easter brunch, first time here. Great food and ambience. The fixed menu had the prefect selection. I had the chicken and biscuit and so delicious, chicken was tender and the syrup had a peppery kick that just blended well. The drinks were on point and priced perfectly. The music was definitely the cherry on top! Highly recommend!

We decided to try books + records for Easter brunch. This was our first time visiting. It was a prix fixe meal. They had fruits, appetizers, dessert on the bar as a buffet then entrees to choose from. Everything was delicious. We definitely enjoyed our time there. Our waitress was very attentive and friendly.

Wonderful experience! Great atmosphere and dog friendly. Food and cocktail menu felt curated and unique, which is so difficult to do these days. Portion sizes were more generous than I was expecting. Tom ka-llins cocktail and the green curry clams were great together! I will absolutely be back!

We needed a good brunch place to finish celebrations for our friend’s birthday and BAR did not disappoint. We were so happy to have live jazz entertainment. The food was very good and we were treated to a glass of champagne to toast our friend. Small but sweet touches made this brunch memorable. Thank you BAR.

My friend and I had a great time! The wagyu tartar and the tuna crudo appetizers were outstanding. And I had the clams with green curry and they were packed full of flavor. Plus a shout out to our server Dom; she was wonderful! We will be back for sure!

Had the most charming and magical experience at Books & Records. From the staff at the door to the bartender to our incredible waiter, Dalton. Everyone was incredible and it totally made our day. Had a meet up with friends I’ve been missing to introduce my girlfriend and we spent hours enjoying the music, food, cocktails, and overall vibe. It was magical. The chef even whipped up a vegan option for my friend. Cannot say enough great things about this place and its wonderful people. Also the salmon latkes.

My husband and I wanted to check out a new restaurant and we really enjoyed our time. We ordered the mezcal revolver and the bittersweet symphony- both were good, but the revolver stole the show! We ordered the wagyu tartar, the carbonara Mac and cheese and the Al pastor trout. The appetizers and the drinks were $20 each and the entrees $38-60. The portions were bigger than expected which was nice. The carbonara mac and cheese was pretty underwhelming as it was just elbow pasta with a little cheese and bacon. Not a lot of flavor but everything else was better. The drinks, the service and the vibe were awesome. Overall, worth checking out.
