Le restaurant Boka, primé d'une étoile Michelin, est connu dans le monde culinaire de Chicago depuis 2003. En Janvier 2014, suite à une rénovation importante, le chef Lee Wolen se joint à l'équipe en tant que partenaire et chef exécutif. Depuis son arrivée à Boka, les critiques s'y intéressent particulièrement. Phil Vettel du Chicago Tribune et du Eater Chicago a reconnu Lee comme "Le Chef de l'année 2014." Plus récemment, Lee a été nommé 'Chef de l'année' en 2015 et le restaurant Boka a reçu le prix de 'Restaurant de l'année' pendant la soirée réputée des Jean Banchet Awards, tenue à Chicago. Le Boka propose une cuisine américaine contemporaine qui se transforme au gré des saisons et de l'approvisionnement des ingrédients locaux, autant que possible. Incredible food. For a Michelin star dining experience, tables way too close and this is not the best ambiance with other party near us way too loud. Front of house needs help. Did tasting menu which can’t complain at all about. Did wine pairing and never saw sommelier once. Our server poured the wine and did great job on memorizing his script but really knew nothing about the wine and asking questions, he tried to answer and can tell he had no idea and should have gotten someone to answer then fake his way through it. He then told us he had to go to another table to pour wine and dismissed us. The people bringing our courses were very short on telling us what we had and couldn’t hear half the time as talking to only one of us and not both. Again great food but front of the house and neighboring table on top of us made for a less than 4 to 5 star experience.

The food and presentation were both excellent. The service was attentive, but not intrusive. We enjoyed all of the meal, The list is impressive. The birthday boy even got a special piece of chocolate cake for dessert which he definitely enjoyed.

I went with my girlfriend for our anniversary, and the restaurant was amazing. The service was exceptional and made sure we were comfortable at all times. Food was fantastic!

My guest and I had the seasonal tasting experience with a wine pairing. The food and wine were outstanding. What fell short was the presentation of the experience. There were different servers presenting each course, some of whom we could not understand, partly due to heavy accents and partly due to the noise level in the restaurant. We enjoyed the food, despite not knowing quite what we were eating with some of the courses. As for ambiance, the restaurant should try to elevate the dress code. Many patrons were wearing jeans or casual wear. My check with tax and tip was just shy of $700. I’d expect a more formal vibe at a Michelin starred restaurant.

We sat at the bar and our server/bartender Alexa was delightful. She made our experience exceptional! The food was delicious: we had the kampachi, gnudi and roasted chicken and all of the dishes were incredible. We cannot wait to go back to try the tasting menu.

TL;DR: If you have the money to spend and want to be adventurous, this is a good spot for you. If you're saving up for a special occasion and don't normally go to $$$ restaurants, skip this one and opt for an RPM or other place where the menu is predictable and you're sure to walk away with a satisfied palate. Pros: - Lovely ambience. The restaurant had a lively feel and sitting at a two-person table, I was able to hear 95% of what my coworker was saying and actually see the food I was eating. Cannot say the same for other high-end restaurants where the music is too loud or lights dimly lit. This had a lovely vibe (albeit very, very small entrance area that would not be comfortable in the winter, summer is fine). - Service was impeccable. Our server gave an air of expertise but also made us feel incredibly comfortable--as if we were long time friends visiting him at his workplace. When our last dessert course left us with a sour taste, he brought us a banana chocolate creme that was much more satisfactory to end the night on. He even sent us home with several loaves of green tea bread so that we (and our significant others) could have some Boka-taste to share. - Very unique dishes and beautifully presented. We did the 8-course dining option with no alcohol pairing (opted for non-spirit drinks instead). Cons: - Food was 2/5 in my opinion. The meat dishes were overpowered by the salty sauce pairings. The desserts were unique, but ending the night on a rhubarb was far too sour. For such a highly rated restaurant, I really hoped to love every dish... but most of them I truly didn't care for. I was glad this was a work meal comped by my company, otherwise I would have been very disappointed to have spent the money out of pocket with my spouse or friend for a special occasion.

Wonderful time. The food was outstanding (best short rib and duck I’ve had) the waitstaff was also very attentive and made for a great experience.

We were visiting Chicago and were able to get a reservation. The restaurant is comfortable, well appointed. The food is top quality and beautifully presented without being too”swell.” And we had fun!

Tasting menu was superb and the reserve wine pairing was wonderful - when the sommelier came by the table he was so warm and passionate to share the background on different wines. The only negative was the service from our main waiter. He was moody and cold in a way that did not match the ambience or service from other members of the team.

Slanted tables at an awkward and unprofessional incline meant any sauce poured on the dish collected on one side, creating an ugly unappetizing mess from a visual perspective. Air conditioning blowing on us frequently throughout the night. Asked to move tables but the host refused despite there being 5+ tables free and available for us next to us (that were not slanted either). We were one of the last parties for the night, so the issue wasn’t that the tables were reserved for other people. Instead they decided somehow that it would be better to turn off the AC every time it decided to turn on. This happened several times throughout our meal, ruining the meal and mood. Table was left dirty after each course. Had some weird liquid on the table that the server never bothered to clean but always made sure to set the silverware on… Very odd and poor attention to detail given that this restaurant has one star. Food was good and met standards for what was expected. Overall, for the terrible service, ambience, and good food, this was not worth the visit. Maybe if it was someone’s very last restaurant on a Chicago Michelin-guide bucket list it’d be okay, but otherwise would not recommend with many other, better options available. Go elsewhere.

If I had one final meal, I would go here. Great food but even better service. The staff on the Saturday night I was there were among the best I’ve seen in any venue ever. Thank you Boka for the memorable experience

I’d like to share my experience at the restaurant. The night was beautiful, and I thoroughly enjoyed the tasting menu. However, as a red wine enthusiast, I wished there were more options available. Despite spending around $300 for the meal, I was disappointed with the interaction with the chef. I requested a photo with him and his signed book, but he seemed hesitant to engage, citing shyness. Seeing him socialize with friends at the bar while I waited left me feeling let down. It almost soured my evening, despite the excellent service from the bartenders. While the food was enjoyable, the lackluster interaction with the chef makes me hesitant to return to this Michelin restaurant. Additionally, I understand that not many patrons may purchase the chef’s book daily, but when someone does, I hope the chef won’t hesitate to engage with them and take a photo.

Amazing well conceived and artistic choices. I had a half duck breast , crispy and like a wagu steak , with perfect accompaniments. Amazing wine list-call ahead to decant your fav, and creative cocktails!

We made sure to try new things, as opposed to better versions of things we know we already enjoy and it made the experience all the more richer. There wasn't one complaint about the food. A drink order was forgotten, but apology wine was also provided because of this, so worked out for my boyfriend. Very interesting house-made soda options and you have to get the banana bc it's just... you have to. Banana soda is a thing you have to try at least once in your life. Would definitely go again.

This was our first experience at Boka, and we were very impressed. We were in Chicago just for the weekend to celebrate my birthday. From start to finish, the meal was superb. Unusual ingredients were that worked well together. The service was flawless as well. They even brought me a small chocolate birthday cake! I will go back!

I have anticipated this night since my friends went during restaurant week in January 2024. The food was delicious and the presentation of the food beautiful. But the service was a little disappointing for a Michelin star restaurant. I will go back because maybe the server was just having a bad night.

The only way I could get a table at Boka on a Saturday was at 5:15 pm with a one day reservation. It was worth eating so early. Augustus, our server was very professional and explained everything on the menu, made some great wine selections for us, and took our dietary restrictions. Our water glasses were never empty and they make an amazing Negroni. We started with the chicken liver mousse and the best parsnips I’ve ever had. I have no idea what the process is for “slow roasted cod”, but it turns out a fish that is buttery like sushi. We also had the chicken breast that was cooked perfectly. The ice cream they offer for dessert was pure decadence. Next time we’re going to try the tasting menu.
