One of the best Indian culinary experiences we have had - very delicious food with high quality ingredients, great service and amazing ambience. Did feel like a Michelin star experience!

The food is too rich with everything soaked in butter and ghee, portion sizes are quite limited and the textures are definitely lacking with all the kababs being a bit mushy. The Passionfruit Chutney cocktail is fantastic. Would not visit again.

My husband and I do not have a lot of experience with Indian cuisine. Coming to London we knew there would be fantastic choices and, as we have no great Indian restaurants where we live in the US we asked the hotel concierge for recommendations. I chose Benares because of its location and the single Michelin star. Here is what I will say: the restaurant was busy and seemed to be frequented by those in the neighborhood. The vibe was more “business,” and there was not an ambiance that lent itself to intimacy. The staff was very attentive and the cocktail list was unique. I had the Passion Martini which was refreshing and spicy at the same time; vodka shaken with mango chutney and strained into a coup glass, then topped with a float of dried orange which had some mesmerizing silver beads on it. Sweet and spicy at the same time. The Samosa appetizer was a delicious twist on the usual preparation. The disconnect seemed to be our lack of experience in ordering. I asked our waiter, who was quite lovely, for recommendations and, while he pointed out a few items, he seemed at a loss to give us any firm direction. Rather than suggesting how he would curate the meal, he simply gave us an overview of the ingredients of each menu item, which we could read. I did take his recommendation of the lamb chops, and I will say it was some of the best lamb I had ever had. Absolutely spectacular. My husband’s dish, on the other hand, which was chicken in a tomato sauce, didn’t live up to anything we particularly enjoyed. The food also came out VERY fast, which barely gave us time to enjoy each course. If you go, I recommend ordering each course WHEN you are ready to eat it.

Went back to try this place again after a 14yr gap. The place has not changed one bit inside, still looks nice and modern. Menu has obviously changed and so has the prices. Atul kocher is now charging a ridiculous amount of money for not alot of food. While the food was nice. I would have liked to have had slightly bigger portions especially for the prices we paid. £37 for a chicken curry! And pau for naan and rice separately. 1 star given purely for the audacity of whacking a 15% service charge on top. And then being given the 3rd degree when you don't wanna pay it . Let's see what it's like in another 14years.
