Bar Chelou is Pasadena’s first true neo-bistro, a casual, convivial space that is both a distillation of Chef Doug Rankin's broad gastronomic interests and a deeply personal expression of his individualistic style. 'Chelou' (French slang for ‘strange’ or ‘unexpected’) is both the name and unifying theme of the restaurant, which draws from a range of culinary traditions and service styles to create something personal, novel and fun.

The restaurant is located within the Pasadena Playhouse complex.

NEED TO KNOW
for wine brought into the restaurant is $30 per 750ml bottle with no limit; we do not offer corkage for wines featured on our wine list. Liquor is not permitted to be brought into the restaurant.

Ample parking is available on surrounding streets and at several paid lots within a one-block radius. We recommend parking in the municipal lot directly behind the building we share with the Playhouse or at the underground lot just across the street

I was surprised that a French restaurant did not serve espresso after the meal. I highly recommend to add that to the menu!

Incredible! Can I go there everyday?! Our server was Garret who was awesome too. Amazing food, ambiance, music, everything! Definitely recommend.

Incredible service. Food comes out relatively fast which we loved. Soms are incredible hospitable and knowledgable. The veggies on the menu are to die for. Very fun smaller wine list with great selections.

Nice looking place with well prepared food. The energetic and loud music distracted from an otherwise sophisticated atmosphere. Having to shout to be heard by your dinner companion made it seem like torture to be there despite the great service. Will not be returning.

Love Bar Chelou's ambiance and the food is outstanding. The service is great too. However, the music is WAY TOO LOUD on top of a naturally loud room. Our servers couldn't hear our orders and we could not have a conversation with the person next to us AT ALL. Frustrating when we took family who we hadn't seen in a couple of years and only had that one night together.

We appreciated our server's accurate and honest descriptions of the dishes we were interested in, and his advice was spot on. I loved my squid dish. Noise level was very loud. Service was excellent and quick almost to the point of feeling a bit rushed. But overall an enjoyable evening.

I love Bar Chelou. This is the 2nd time I’ve eaten here and it is just so very excellent. Our waiter was wonderful as was anyone that came to our table to bring us a dish. The food is beautifully simple but so flavorful in a way that makes you want to come back again and again. Their food is crave-worthy. It’s probably one of the best restaurants in LA right now and I would dare to say it’s the 3rd best restaurant meal we have ever had! The tables were pretty close together and it is quite noisy in there which does it make it difficult to have conversations. But that is the only thing that I feel is a drawback here.

We were really excited to try bar chelou after hearing such good things. It was one of my most anticipated restaurants, sadly I was beyond let down. I don’t mind spending money on good food that takes time to make but I just don’t feel like the prices were justifiable here. The burrata toast was not worth 17 dollars and I can go to Roma market up the road and get all the ingredients for 10 bucks and make triple the amount of food we were given. The potatoes had a great texture but the sauce lacked an acid and the potatoes could be salted a bit more. Carrots were just ok which was a let down since they were so hyped. I feel like Korean ban chan in Hmart has better seasoned carrots. The shelling beans were the favorite of the whole night but still the portion was way off. The pace of the food being brought out was off and we all left hungry since we didn’t want to order more food because 1 it’s crazy overpriced and 2 nothing we had wowed us. We decided to go with the pork chop and the duck leg as our mains. The pork chop was quite literally the worst thing we ever had. We asked for it medium and our server said they only cook it medium rare, which there is no way. Plus we should be able to decide. When it came out it was beyond dry and most definitely not “medium rare” if anything it was over cooked. It was literally just a pork chop and just that. I few bits of flavorless cabbage on top and a horseradishy sauce on the bottom which was not good. The texture of the dish was off and it was not even hot. The duck leg was definitely a whole lot better but just tasted like an upscale grain bowl. I came really hyped to try out the dessert, but sadly didn’t even dare to try any after our savory food, since I was let down so much by everything else. I tried giving the restaurant the benefit of the doubt, maybe the chef wasn’t in house or it was an odd day. But as I looked in the kitchen I saw the head chef and was immediately disappointed that there wasn’t an excuse.sad times

The food here is so original and delicious. Bold flavors and textures, fresh and light and surprising. The staff are great. All round, a winner and one of the very best and most original restaurants on the east side

Everything was great, except probably for the fact that number of courses had a mayo or something like a hollandaise sauce....it was a bit much at the end. Would go again, but would select food differently.

Sadly we did not have a good experience. This restaurant is chic. The servers chic. The food not up to par nor the service. It started off with my husband ordering his usual drink - a Campari and soda. He orders it everywhere. Here they did not seem to know what it was. They brought a glass mostly of Campari with a splash of soda and no ice. The server was not attentive most of the time. It appeared she was not particularly interested in actually helping customers. We managed to finally get a glass of ice at least for his drink. Cheese appetizer was fine. Carrot appetizer ok but there was no mention of cilantro on the menu and our server never asked about food allergies. My husband is allergic to cilantro. We ordered the short ribs. Short ribs are always a cut that must be cooked low and slow as it isn’t a tender cut. Either someone put the beef in the oven or sous vide too late and not enough time was allowed to cook it or they don’t get how to cook it. It was almost inedible. We should have sent it back. I’d ordered a glass of wine when we ordered the entree because the server was so illusive. Did the wine arrive prior or with the entree? No, I had to get someone’s attention to get it. I ordered a Cesanese. It was served way too cold. Definitely not 68 degrees. Tasted as if it was just taken out of the 55 degree wine refrigerator. All the way down the list a very disappointing dining experience.

Came back for a second time. Food and ambience were excellent. Our main server wasn’t that great. Servers who came out to deliver dishes were excellent. When you ask a server their opinion because you’re deciding between two items, the answer can’t be “you can get both”. Yes. I know that.

Dinner at Bar Chelou marries the world of classic French cuisine with its delicious technique and sensibilities, with bold and subtle Asian and Spanish flavors, with the freshness and bounty of California produce. The union is sometimes strange but rewarding to the diner who appreciates and wants that unique dining experience. The wine list matches the cuisine very well with some off beat bottles almost tailor made for certain dishes. A few things I would highly recommend is the Squid with Swiss Chard, the Duck Leg, and the Lemon Chamomile Semifreddo. Enjoy.

Very cozy restaurant, with incredible ambience. Food/sweets were amazing too! Drinks were ok, but nothing special. Downside - 4% health tax is not a good look on any restaurant and customers wouldn't ask you to remove it simply because its not polite. Pay your staff better! Or include it in the price of the food item.

Nice stop for before the play. I was very noisy so don't go if you want a romantic evening or a place to talk. The food and service were good, but... It was so cold inside, you could not enjoy the food as you should. Luckily the plates were served warm so the food was spared the blowing AC.

We arrived and were seated at exactly our reservation time. Sat for 15 minutes with no water and no contact with wait staff. Once our server showed up everything was great. Prompt, attentive service. Fun, exciting, interesting food. Music was WAY too loud. The crowd noise was good, but music was bad… An enjoyable time was had by all.

The menu may or may not explain key ingredients, so be sure to ask questions if that’s of any concern (in my case the snap peas had a chorizo that was not mentioned on the menu). Drinks (and bartenders!) are always the highlight. The food is spectacularly plated but doesn’t quite live up in taste. The squid was very thin and still overcooked and overly toothsome, the clam toast was good and two pieces was a great size, carrots taste vaguely Thai (in a good way, but not cohesive to the rest of the menu) with peanut and mint elements. Service from very single person we interacted with was 10/10. A cute date spot for Pasadena, definitely.

What a delight to have a restaurant that pays attention to all details in the neighborhood. From the hook for your bag on the table to the decor, from the starters to the mains, this is a very thoughtful and fun restaurant. Service is excellent and the food is not only interesting but very well done. A gem in Pasadena.

The food was amazing..the chef elevated otherwise simple ingredients to a level of deliciousness which was unimaginable. The same goes for the desserts. My wife and I ordered a little bit of everything, and did not regret it. My only gripe is the lack of diversity in the mixed drinks section.
