Bar Chelou is Pasadena’s first true neo-bistro, a casual, convivial space that is both a distillation of Chef Doug Rankin's broad gastronomic interests and a deeply personal expression of his individualistic style. 'Chelou' (French slang for ‘strange’ or ‘unexpected’) is both the name and unifying theme of the restaurant, which draws from a range of culinary traditions and service styles to create something personal, novel and fun.

The restaurant is located within the Pasadena Playhouse complex.

NEED TO KNOW
for wine brought into the restaurant is $30 per 750ml bottle with no limit; we do not offer corkage for wines featured on our wine list. Liquor is not permitted to be brought into the restaurant.

Ample parking is available on surrounding streets and at several paid lots within a one-block radius. We recommend parking in the municipal lot directly behind the building we share with the Playhouse or at the underground lot just across the street

Really unique foods and excellent plating. Service and ambiance were great. The dining room set up felt a bit awkward, but that felt minor. Overall great date night spot.

This was the first time that my wife and I had eaten at this restaurant and were impressed with the quality of the food and service. The leg of duck and the pork chop were outstanding.

I’ve been here twice now! The first time I went it was absolutely perfect and I was so excited to go again. The food was wonderful both times with every dish tasting amazing! The cocktails are incredible too - I’m still dreaming of my lemon drop martini! The only thing on my second visit was that it was really cold and I had to keep my jacket on the whole night, and the noise was just a tiny bit too loud so I had to yell to hear my friends… I’ll definitely go back but I hope my next visit is more like the first time I went!

This place was amazing! Celebrated my girlfriend’s birthday on a Saturday. The food was beyond great! The crispy potatoes and the lamb ribs are a definite must. Drinks were also great and the staff was super friendly. I also asked for a booth for my girlfriend and they did not disappoint. Highly recommend this place.

One of best meals I’ve had in a very long time and we continually seek out great restaurants wherever we go. Excellent!

In my opinion, I’m not sure where the Michelin stars come from. It was a lovely place but for the value and the food, I didn’t find them to be exceptional like I was hoping they would be, just simply mediocre or subpar. I don’t see myself returning unless it’s just maybe for a cocktail before a show at the Playhouse.

I was surprised that a French restaurant did not serve espresso after the meal. I highly recommend to add that to the menu!
