Bar Chelou is Pasadena’s first true neo-bistro, a casual, convivial space that is both a distillation of Chef Doug Rankin's broad gastronomic interests and a deeply personal expression of his individualistic style. 'Chelou' (French slang for ‘strange’ or ‘unexpected’) is both the name and unifying theme of the restaurant, which draws from a range of culinary traditions and service styles to create something personal, novel and fun.

The restaurant is located within the Pasadena Playhouse complex.

NEED TO KNOW
for wine brought into the restaurant is $30 per 750ml bottle with no limit; we do not offer corkage for wines featured on our wine list. Liquor is not permitted to be brought into the restaurant.

Ample parking is available on surrounding streets and at several paid lots within a one-block radius. We recommend parking in the municipal lot directly behind the building we share with the Playhouse or at the underground lot just across the street

The food was good, the ambiance is very romantic and chill but sadly the service was not so good. What threw me off was how the server was not taking our order until we had everything ready to order and was very pushy about that. We wanted to put in a few starters and a couple of mains to share and see where we're at to order more but he kept saying no no no which I thought was very weird. The portions of the plates were on the smaller side. For example the "cheese" was literally 3 slices of the different cheeses. so with 6 people we had to order 3-4 of the same item to be able to share. But their cocktails were great.

This was my first time to Bar Chelou and we were celebrating a friend's birthday, who had been there several times. The food was excellent and our server, Clementine, had a very uncanny resemblance to Caitlin Clark. My only "gripe" was the fact that we were charged for the sorbet, which was my friend's birthday "cake." Most restaurants do not charge for a birthday cake, etc.

Delicious food - one of the best meals start to finish we've had in a while. Friendly service and lots of fun, too.

First time dining in this restaurant. Great location as we were going to the Pasadena Playhouse, next door. Small plates with interesting variable choices, great personable service, but the noise level was a bit loud. Will definitely return to try other menu offerings.

Potatoes and pork chop were great, everything else was average and not worth the cost. Servers were very nice, atmosphere lovely but noisy.

Undoubtedly one of the best dining experiences you will have in LA. Very rare to find a place where there isnt a miss on the menu. Che Doug never disappoints and has exceeded my already high expectations of the meals I intend to enjoy at his restaurants.

Immediately seated by friendly staff. Fun innovative menu that encourages sharing. Helpful sommelier that explained the different wines. Large assortment of veggie dishes. Tasty mains and especially good desserts. Couldn’t have had a better experience.
