At Babette, the husband and wife team of Joan Ellis and Patrick Hooker, are in the kitchen preparing each plate to ensure that their vision and taste profile are translated to each diner. The attention to detail are evident in not only the food they make but also the ambience they have created. The interior of the restaurant is natural brick and the couple have chosen a rich color palette of deep blues and greens for the walls. An elegant chandelier hangs over a natural wood backed booth providing both a cozy and elegant feel to the room. Outside on the spacious patio, a magnificent redwood tree provides natural shade to the built in seating area and plants are abundant creating a lush, garden setting.
Live music Brunches, New York style Pizza, unique Entrees and our famous Sicilian Lemon Almond Pistachio Cake are just a taste of what you will find at Babette. Warm and knowledgeable staff will make you feel like part of the family.

For parties between 10-20 people, we offer a Large Party Prix Fixe Menu: A multi-course, family style experience which features dishes from our seasonal menu, and is the best way to dine at Babette with a larger group. We consider anything over 20 to be a full by-out and you will need to speak with us directly for details. Our large Prix Fixe Menus are priced separately for either Brunch or Dinner. Brunch- $35 per person (beverages, tax and gratuity not included) Dinner- $50 per person includes dessert (beverages, tax and gratuity not included) Please note: the entire group must participate. Where possible, we will accommodate dietary restrictions and allergies, and of course, you are welcome to add on extra dishes from our menu.

Upon entering the restaurant one confronts a rather long Corridor with some food prep space on the right. There's a host stand near the entrance but no one was there. We didn't even notice the stand and kept walking down the corridor when someone in the food prep area in a rather booming and aggressive voice told us to wait for the hostess. This was a little off-putting. But when the host disappeared she was nice enough and took us back to the wonderfully Charming patio in the rear. We were surprised there were so many families dining there but the food turned out to be rather family friendly especially the pizzas because they're very large. I'd have to say they were of excellent quality although not quite the style I prefer. The crust was excellent but the pizza itself was just a little cheesier than I usually like. We also had the asparagus salad which disappointed me somewhat as it was rather lightly dressed and not that interesting. When time for dessert came we ordered a panna cotta dessert, waited about 15 minutes and then the server came back and said they were out of it but suggested we get a strawberry rhubarb tartlett. That sounded good but after another 15 minutes the server returned and said well, they only had one person making both the salads and the desserts and so it might be a little while. At that point we canceled dessert paid the bill and left. The prices were very reasonable I would have to say and I would not be adverse to returning at some point.

One of my favorite Berkeley restaurants! Such a lovely backyard dining experience under a redwood tree surrounded by beautiful plantings and a live jazz band. Great food, friendly and responsive staff. Love it!

First time visitor, looking forward to more visits in the future. Dinner with myself and my partner, along with her East Coast mother, who I had not yet met. Could go off the tracks, right? Not so. The ambiance is most conducive to conduciveness. Excellent choices from a relatively small menu. Inventive dishes--carrot flan?!--as well as a pizza that distinguishes itself from that prepared by other restaurants. Is it the flour? The cheese? The love? Who knows. Just eat it, eat it.

My husband I were disappointed with our recent experience at Babette. I had been to Babette 2-3 times for lunch with friends and was looking forward to taking my husband to the restaurant. The service was below average, there was no one to greet us at the door and we had to wander through the place to find someone, the the owner was surly and ill-natured when he found us and quite full of himself, the waiter did not bring what I ordered to the table, the wine portion was minimal, the food average. I hope they can improve all of this.

When we got there, there was no one to greet us. I had to go to the back to get someone and it still took about ten minutes after that for someone to come and seat us. The patio is lovely, but the food was truly terrible. We ordered the house Eggs Benedict. The English Muffins were untoasted and soggy. There was almost no smoked fish. The spinach hummus was the consistency and taste of baby food. The eggs were very overdone, and the sauce was unappetizing. Babette charges a mandatory 18% service charge and then asks for a tip on top of that. In addition, the restaurant charges 3% to use a credit card. The coffee was good and our wait person was nice, but that didn't make up for the fact that a simple one dish breakfast for two people came to $100. Won't be going back for the bad overpriced food.

From the incredibly attentive service to the quality and creativity of the menu, everything was flawless. The patio provided a warm and inviting backdrop for what was a fabulous meal. We totally enjoyed the soju cocktails, especially the kumquat and ginger drink. The desserts were out of this world - don’t miss the pistachio cake and the pot de crème if they are on the menu! We will be back and can’t wait to try everything they offer! What a gem of a place!

Food was ok but not wonderful particularly for the price point and hype. we found the food somewhat bland. Had to wait a very long time for waiter to take order and to receive drinks and food. Looks like they don't have sufficient wait staff.

We had a wonderful meal at Babette with our two adult children. The service was excellent, as was the food (especially the cheesy garlic pizza, but, really, we ate so many dishes and it was hard to pick a favorite). Best of all was the ambiance in the back patio -- it was warm and festive while also still plenty private. We will definitely be back again soon!!

Babette's is a great place to hold a special occasion, a birthday or anniversary party. There is always something on the menu that suits everyone of your guests and the entire staff is so welcoming and efficient. It is also a lovely venue for meeting a friend. The noise level is never too high for intimate conversations. I recommend especially this restaurant for people who wish to avoid indoor seating. Their beautifully restored back area is an inviting place to sit.

Second time to Babette for brunch and both times I enjoyed it immensely. Great service, food, ambiance. I had the eggs benedict with fish and curry sauce and my husband had the pancakes with sour cherries and almonds. Both were equally delicious. They have a special latte with cardamon and chocolate that is so good. Too bad it was raining because we wanted to sit in their lovely outdoor patio and listen to live music. Next time!

Our only datapoint is Valentine’s Day, so huge caveat since V-day is never a good value proposition. Even with that consideration, there were a couple of misses. 1) there was a prefix menu that had been published. So we had pretty much decided on what we wanted ahead of time. Our res was 7:45 and we sat down. They had an amuse and a glass of bubbly as part of the v-day bundle. Server was great and informative, gushing about the ribeye (which we were going to choose anyway). However when they returned to take our order, they informed us that it was sold out. No big deal I guess, but it was not a late seating so would not have expected that a prefix menu run out of its “star” dish so quickly. We moved on. The second choice was scallop crudo snd it was fine. Not a lot of scallop to be had, but that’s crudo these days. Gin Cocktail was great. We both got the Dungeness crab risotto. Mine was cooked properly, but there were quite a few bits of shell and body. Meh. It happens. Wife’s risotto was totally undercooked and soupy. We hesitated to send it back but ultimately decided it had to be redone. We waited a bit for the new batch, which is of course understandable. However I think this was a missed opportunity for the staff to send a comp drink out for my wife as she kinda just sat there. When it came out, it was nicely done and she enjoyed it. Dessert was fine, wife had a coffee. Tip was included Total came out to be around $350. Definitely expensive for what it was, but hey it’s V day and we had fun. All in all, we had a lovely time. Servers were great and I def want to go back on a normal day.

We love Babette! The owners and staff are warm and friendly. The indoor space is cozy and charming. The outdoor patio is wonderful. It is not covered against rain but when not raining, there are plenty of heaters. When sunny, it is delightful to sit among the greenery. And then there is the food! The menu is creative and delicious. We have loved every meal there. We recommend that you go! And enjoy! Veronica

The outdoor patio is nice. When we went in the early afternoon on a Saturday, there was a band playing great music in that area which really added to the ambiance. Food was great and staff were very kind.

We came for Sunday brunch and immediately liked the vibe. Very friendly and attentive service and nice surroundings. The live band is also a welcome touch. The cheesy shrimp tacos were plain and didn't have much shrimp in them. The southern breakfast was tasty. The downside is the portions are pretty small, especially for the price. It's sad that restaurants have to charge so much to stay in business, and I understand the price points. Still, for a bill in excess of $100 I'd like to at least leave with a full stomach.

Service was amazing…I still don’t know how the server did it. So many tables indoors because of the rain. She was stellar. The food equally so., the menu has a good variety for vegetarians and omnivores alike. We had the arugula salad - a good portion, too. And main course, the Moroccan Portabello mushroom? It was crispy on the outside and filled with bulgur wheat and roasted vegetables. Very good and would order again. As a side note for vegans, they offer vegan cheese as an option for the pizzas. The cocktails are super creative & all sound delicious. They can be a bit on the sweet side though and if ordering the ginger / kumquat caipirinha (what an amazing concoction), you may want to ask for less simple syrup or perhaps more soda water & citrus. Overall, the ambience and the service alone would make me return again and again.

Babette is a hidden gem! We made last minute reservations for brunch the evening before and chose the fireplace seating. It was the loveliest area being right next to a live band, where noise level wasn't an issue. It felt like our party had the vip section to an outdoor garden concert! Would definitely come back again.

They open at 11am and that's when we came. It seemed as though the staff had arrived 5 minutes before us---things were not ready at all. Food was great as usual. Advice: go there 11:30 or after.

Lovely outdoor eating area. Came here for a group dinner and lots of options for people. They did give away our reservation to a random group (we were on time) because there was some confusion. Unique pizza combos! (Pizzas were a touch oily). Had a shrimp gnocchi which was delicious as well!

A hidden gem. We sat in the lovely back yard near a heating lamp that made the dining even more comfortable. The food was very good and the service was excellent. The music made it a little hard for us older folk to hear each other, but having the music as background was enjoyable.

We loved it. Great staff, service and wonderful food. Gratuity added by the restaurant is only 18%---it should be at least 20% if not more. The staff deserve more.

We went here for brunch to celebrate a birthday for a large party of 15. Food was quite tasty and server was very friendly and accommodating. We had a few toddlers under 5 and would really recommend to the staff to include a few more items for a kid's menu for brunch.
