Neither Open Table nor Axels website shared that only brunch buffet would be Acadian. Buffet had several serving dishes that were empty. Service was SLOW and awkward.

The food was very inferior. We have been going to Axels for years. The new ownership has failed us miserably. We used to love Axels, but our experience on their Mother's day buffet was far from what we expected. I hope this was just a glitch but not hopeful. Don't know if I will return.

The buffet was not stocked at all. Line for the buffet was very long. We waited 15 minutes past our reservation time to be seated. The waitress stopped by once. When the bill finally came, the waitress to my credit card. After 20 minutes she did not return. I had to hunt her down and then she argued that she already gave my card back. I asked her to check her pocket where I saw her put the card and yes, there it was. The cost of the buffet was $50.00/person. Not a value at all, poorly stocked, cold, lots of choices but most of them empty. Not clean. Serving spoons were sitting in the little bit of food that was left.

I want to start this by saying this review is specifically for the Mother’s Day buffet at the Mendota location, which is a terrific place. Mother’s Day at Axel’s is s tradition for us with our young family, but I took my mom there many times before starting a family of my own. It’s tradition for good reason as the food is great and the service is unmatched. Axel’s is an institution in the south metro for good reason. It gives classic lounge / steakhouse vibes with its dark interiors and high backed booths while also offering a really nice patio (no views from the patio as it’s on the back of the building). Pros: consistently excellent service. Great bar, clean spaces. For consideration (specific to Mother’s Day): the menu is essentially unchanged in the years we’ve gone. That’s not a bad thing at all. You get good samples of their food including their bull bites and garlic shrimp and everything you’ll have is very well composed; however, for an adventurous menu, I’d seek someplace else. The other consideration is the price: plan on at least $100 per pair.

They were hugely overbooked, yet only had three servers. The servers tried valiantly, but there should have been at least twice as many. The menu in the restaurant did not match the menu online. Notably, the signature popovers that used to always be included with any entree are now an expensive add-on. Sadly, it was only after waiting for them to materialize automatically as they had in the past, and eventually asking our harried server that we found out about this change. We were informed that the menu (and prices) had changed three weeks ago, but they hadn't gotten around to updating the online menus. Where the ambiance used to be warm and relaxed, this time it was overcrowded, overloud, and chaotic. We used to choose Axel's for the popovers, the excellent service, the excellent food, and the ambiance. All four were absent. I can't think of any reason to go back and pay higher prices for a diminished dining experience.

Axel’s always has great drinks and appetizers. And the popovers are what we really go for. Avoid the new recipe for what they call a chicken sandwich. It’s really a ground chicken burger on a burger bun. It’s so heavy and dense that you’ll be asking for a steak knife to cut it. The service was great… our waitress brought champaign and cake for our anniversary celebration. She also offered to change out our “sandwiches” but we were already full from the appetizers.

The food was delicious and our server was pleasant but very busy. Apparently the bar mixed up my friend's drink order and twice she was given the wrong drink. About 20 minutes later she finally got her drink. We were toasting her birthday so all were waiting for her drink!!!!!

Excellent experience. The Walleye was outstanding as was the French Onion soup and the Bull Bites. Great service and well paced. Great date night spot.

First of all, if drinks have gone up in price from $9.00 to $13 then why not just put on the bill, Martini....$13. Instead there was bits of the drink price put in different spots on the bill. So it at first appears we were paying for more drinks than we had. A bill should be easy to read and this didn't even come close. This was in regard to the bar charges. Even when the waitress tried to explain it, it was confusing. I understand prices are going up on some things. It shouldn't be hard to put one amount for one item....

Axel's used to be one of my favorite restaurants. Not anymore. Menu selection has been drastically reduced. No more popovers. No side salad with entree. And the tenderloin steak I ordered was literally the worst steak I ever had at a restaurant. Service was very good but food quality has cratered. Not sure I will ever go back. That is a shame.

Axel’s has been a fixture in Mendota for so long, and is a restaurant we frequent often. However, Axel’s now is under new ownership. It would seem the new owners don’t understand how important it is to maintain continuity when a very popular & much-loved restaurant changes hands. While the ambiance and excellent service remain the same (for now, at least), the menu has changed and mainstays of Axel’s no longer are available (eg chicken dumpling soup…gone!), or now are charged (eg popovers, now offered as an appetizer for $4). Talking with friends who also have been regular patrons of Axel’s, these changes are not for the better. Very sad.

Great service. Prefer they return to supper club menu. Popovers as appetizers? What's up with that? Prime Rib was great. Liked the hummus appetizer they used to have. Why change things? Also, took three tries for this review page to function. Almost gave up.

A busy night and we waited about a half hour after our reservation time to be seated (7:00 pm reservation, sat at 7:30 pm). The appetizers were great( Charcuterie board and Popovers). We had a nice bottle of wine from the reserve list, but it seemed a bit warm. The server indicated they are stored in an office. Would think these would be in a cool place or wine refrigerator. The walleye was excellent. My wife’s prime rib was cold and not good. They took off the bill. Glad to see the restaurant busy, just need to improve a bit.

Went to repeat great experience from a couple months ago but favorites on menu are gone, though still posted on the web site, prices up significantly and the service was poor. Almost no one there when we arrived at noon but didn’t get our food order taken for an hour! Food was good but nothing special. Who removes chicken wild rice soup from Axels? We don’t go there because we want the same experience as every other place. Very disappointed.

Had a very nice dinner with great service. Big portions of good quality food. A bit noisy for a group of 7 but otherwise would recommend highly.

The service was good. The buffet was good except the fish was way overcooked and dry, but that is because you can’t do fish and keep it warm as it is still cooking. They also had a sign that said it was walleye but was cod. The hand carved ham and beef were excellent. The pork loin was tough. Probably won’t do buffets anymore.

It was extremely busy when we got there,but were seated quickly. We had a nice table by the window. Our server, Tracy, was excellent. She was there when we needed something and was so pleasant. The food choices were great. I didn't expect so many. Everyone did an excellent job. God bless them.

It was a brunch/buffet so rating probably isn't reflective of a normal dining experience. Having said that, for a $50/person buffet it was far below Axels normal standards. We were a party of three and had to ask our server on 3 occasions for a third glass of water, they had no decaf coffee available, two of us ordered a "virgin" Mary and it was so spicy we couldn't drink it, no salad bar to speak of just cole slaw, no butter for the bread, main dishes were luke warm at best, bacon and sausages were under-cooked I suspect due to rushing them out to restock supply, walleye tray was a mess with just broken up pieces available and prime rib was tough and cold. At least the deserts were tasty although limited selections. Towards the end of our meal the chef was working the room asking guests how their meal was and unfortunately for him he stopped at our booth and asked us. We relayed everything to him and he offered to send the manager over but we told him not to bother. After years of having nothing but good experiences at Axels our last two visits have been a disaster. We won't be going to Axels for Mothers day brunch.

Sirloin steak not available so waitress recommended the flank steak, it was tough and definitely not worth the money. First disappointment ever at Axels.

Our server was terrific and the best part of the meal. My French onion soup was great, as were the French fries. The French dip sandwich was kind of a greasy mess. My dinner companions enjoyed their walleye and shrimp orders. The atmosphere was very nice. The value only moderate. We'll be back but I'll need to try a different entree.

My friend and I had lunch at Axel’s and really had an enjoyable experience! The “order two” lunch option is great, and we both really enjoyed the crab cakes and seafood chowder. Gretta was awesome and made the experience more enjoyable! We will be back soon!

We went to celebrate a birthday. Our server was attentive and energetic. Our food was tasty. We always enjoy coming here.

seating and service was excellent. We had the fish fry dinner which is very good for $25.00. You get soup or salad, popovers and the entree is two pieces of cod, two jumbo shrimp and a piece of walleye along with green beans and shoestring fries. I had a glass of wine at happy price. They were totally out of N/A beer, however. Always enjoy Axel's!
