Japonaise

We adhere to the craftsmanship of traditional Japanese cuisine. Chef Kenkichi Yamamoto handpicks the freshest ingredients of the season, using them to inspire the creation of all his dishes. Our kaiseki prix fixe menu has traditional Japanese flavors mixed with french elements featuring shun (seasonal) ingredients. The 9 courses range from the chef's interpretation of sashimi to unique steamed, boiled and grilled dishes. We have seasonal fish and fish offerings traditionally found in Japanese cuisine as well as other dishes to order a la carte. The menu is set for you to experience a dinning experience like no other. After this dinner, I decided to start this diary of my food experience, in particular for the memorable ones. Oct 21, 2022 (Fri) It's been quite a while since my last visit to Westwood neighborhood, and this area is never on the top of the list when it comes to Japanese cuisine. (I might be wrong) There's nothing wrong with the food, it's delicious and fresh which is expected given the price. No intention to list everything I ordered, but I think the Toro sashimi, uni nigiri, wagyu beef are outstanding. SERVICE IS SHOCKINGLY POOR. This dude waiter is absolutely pushy when it comes to recommendation. "I think you should start with sashimi, Toro is great (MP on menu)....do you want the xxxxx yellowtail sushi? (my friend just want normal yellowtail and the premium version is 40% more in price)...you want 4 sushi? (despite I asked for 2 sushi since not all of us are eating). All in all, I felt very uncomfortable with his aggressive behavior and standing within 2 inches next to my friend when my friend is looking at the bill and deciding how much tips to pay. OH, boss is sneaky as hell. He doesn't even answer my question on where he is from, he is very weird. I felt very bad for the normal staff working there. Good food NEEDS TO come with a certain level of service. (I think I would have done a way better job than those dudes even with my historical waiter work experience at Starbucks and some restaurants).

Sushi was fresh and delicious, but the crab chawamushi stood out as the favorite. Our server was very helpful with providing sake recommendations.

Asuka is absolutely, rightfully authentic. Freshest uni flown from Japan and served at that one perfect temperature is art, and that is not a dime a dozen in L.A. despite the prolific sushi establishments. Go experience this even just once - you have to have deep pockets but I promise, you won't be disappointed.

The first time we dined at Asuka, the experience was fantastic. This 2nd time, not so much. We greeted the owner when we first arrived (he was very chatty and energetic our first visit), but this visit, he dismissed our greeting. We were seated in the outdoor patio next to the flowering and fencing, only to be harassed homeless 2x. We ordered the premium kaiseke. The food was excellent, albeit the sashimi and sushi cuts were smaller than prior, but the wait time was unacceptable as the first course took over 1hr to arrive. Owner asked us if we were hungry while we were waiting, but declined to send out a courtesy snack. Lastly, two tables bickering over if the heat lamp should be on or off (guess what, heat impacts EVERYONE in a close setting). The food is worth a try as the chefs are very good and the ingredients top notch. The staffing, service and overall dining experience have much to work on.
