Owner and Executive Chef Melissa Araujo is a 2024 James Beard Foundation Best Chef Southeast Semifinalist. Alma is an award winning Honduran restaurant located in the historic New Orleans Bywater, just outside the French Quarter.

Alma means soul in Spanish. The menu showcases Chef Melissa Araujo's Honduran heritage and takes each guest on a journey through food and culture. The Soul has many stories to tell; Alma's tale is shared through it's dining experience. From Pollo Chuco, to Bloody Mary's and avocado toast, Alma offers an extensive array of dishes focusing on Honduran Food.

Chef Araujo’s Father was Born in La Ceiba, Honduras and her memories of her childhood are centered around this particular view of the city. The mountains in the back, the ocean, the cool air in my face, my best memories were made in this city. Alma has given me the opportunity to recreate these memories and share them with our guests.

Wonderful experience at Alma Cafe for the Oxbow Rum tasting and tapas. Chef Melissa is a gracious host with so much attention to detail. I started with a cocktail, expertly made Aperol Spritz. The oysters were fresh and perfectly paired with pineapple. Second course of tuna ceviche that took be back to Mexico. Slightly sweet with a hint of spice. Lastly, fresh lobster and scallop roll!

Excellent, authentic Honduran food and great atmosphere . We will be keeping it on our list of places to visit so that we can explore the rest of the menu! From what we had it is no wonder why Alma Cafe has been nominated for a James Beard Award.

Reservations made at this restaurant are not honored. It’s first come, first served on a wait list. The manager confirmed as such during this visit. We waited close to an hour past the confirmed reservation time. Therefore, there is not useful reason for this restaurant to be listed on OpenTable or any reservation services website.

This place is a hidden gem. The food was amazing and it is a differential cuisine from the great food in New Orleans. I will definitely be going back.

The food was pretty good and the service was great. However the prices were too much for what the food was. A baliada was 12 dollars which was just a little ridiculous to me but it was a good one time experience!

I came here for my father’s birthday and we love the Alma breakfast, it was so delicious. Service was exceptional and we had a great time.

Would absolutely recommend visiting Alma if you’re in New Orleans and want a change from Cajun / creole food! The food was incredibly fresh, with loads of options (some spins on familiar favorites as well). We’ll definitely make a stop in next time we’re in town!

Had a bad experience with the food today. Louisiana Omelett was way to heavy on eggs and if we pay 10.- extra for blue crab, the least we can expect is that the amount of it is more than a teaspoon. The avocado toast, too, was not up to par. Really disappointed. This place used to be great. Did you exchange the chef??? Bad decision

If you have a reservation on a weekend they may not honor it. About 5 minutes before my reservation time I received and email from open table that said I collected my points. I figured the other member of the party had arrived and checked in. Well when we got there they said they didn’t have a reservation for us. I pulled it up in my email, and then they had a new story. They are “working with open table on this” and on weekends and especially ones like Mother’s Day weekend they are first come first served. Why would they ask me for my reservation, look in the system for it, and look at my email if they didn’t honor reservations? Well I then learned that they had just seated a party of the same number of people a few minutes prior. Clearly, they gave away my reservation and then lied and tried to gaslight me. If they just owned up, I would have been fine. Mistakes happen. Instead the host who had been rude the entire time and the manager who thought I was dumb enough to fall for his lie insisted that they had room and we would be seated. Well we were shoved into a couple of tables and it was fine but not comfortable. Then came the food service. It took a while for them to come to our table for drink orders which is usual there and expected. It took a while for them to get our food order, again expected as we know this place. I ordered the breakfast tacos which have roasted poblanos on them. They were straight from the refrigerator. The rest of the taco was warm but they didn’t heat these. Not sure if that’s typical but it was odd. Someone else ordered the lox toast and the lox was a very strange texture with very little flavor. A different person had a Bloody Mary and it was odd. The chili powder was really strong and it made the drink, well, odd. The rest was good but it did take a long time and honestly I just wanted to leave from the moment I dealt with these folks. We’ve been here before and enjoyed it but this experience makes me not want to return.

Good food but service was horrible. Had to move from outside because it was raining but there was no space inside. While waiting for the rain to die down they essentially forced us to take our food to go and didn’t comp us anything or give any discount for the inconvenience. I explained my frustration to the manager he gave a very lame apology and didn’t offer anything. When we got home our order was missing items.
