alaMar is a Contemporary Dominican Kitchen located in the hip Uptown Oakland area. Bravo TV's Top Chef Season 18 Contestant, Chef Nelson German, dives deep into his Dominican culture at alaMar by offering a regional menu of foods he grew up on that his mom, grandmother, and Aunt Maritza would cook and NYC-style Dominican street foods he enjoyed as a child. German brings a unique take to family recipes with his contemporary NYC twist on traditional dishes, including his popular braised oxtail dish. There is indoor seating and a dog-friendly patio with heaters for al fresco dining. The not-to-be-missed craft cocktail program reflects Caribbean influences such as the signature Mamajuana cocktail.

We went to the original alaMar seafood restaurant concept when it opened 10 years ago and it was fabulous. We dragged our feet going back when Nelson and May changed the restaurant concept/menu over to his Dominican roots. Hearing about the challenges they've had with burglaries we wanted to show our support and made a reservation for Sunday night. Not only was the food, service and ambience fantastic, but it was also amazing to see so many people come out on a Sunday night to support Nelson and May. The place was hopping and the DJ was spinning great tunes. I've not had that much fun on a Sunday night in a while. :) We sincerely hope that allaMar stays open. We'll be back soon to either eat-in or takeout.

My husband and I always have a great experience at alamar. He’s Dominican too, and he loves to come for the food, ambiance, and the chance to talk to chef Nelson. The food is delicious and flavorful, the drinks are unique and tasty, and the staff is very attentive and sweet. We celebrated the 10-year anniversary last night at the restaurant and we had an incredible experience. Great music, great vibes, and lots of Dominican love.

The service feels very Michelin star rated. The service is always consistent. The team seems to operate as a family; 5 people visited the table. I miss their brunch. The oxtail tacos are good. the latin curly fries are good too. They have good drinks too.

I prefer spicier food and I expected the oxtails to be more flavorful, so it was surprising that they were not (but I’m not that familiar with Domincan food) but, otherwise, the meal was fine. The portions were larger than expected, so that was a plus. The chicken bites (not sure what they were called) were good also. The ambience and customer service were fine. I would give it another try, but go for the snapper on my next visit.

This was my 2nd time at alaMar, and I recommend! Especially before a show at the Paramount Theatre or if you’re looking for a spot near Lake Merritt, it’s so good. I really like the chile glazed sweet plantain, camarones criolla, and the Dominican garlic udon noodles (so comforting). The service was very kind and it felt like a family. I’ll be coming back!

The Pernil is to die for - melt in your mouth, falling from the bone deliciousness, and BIG portions! Mixed salad with avocado dressing was fantastic antidote to the rich meat and tostones are a must-have for me. The Tres Leches dessert was moist and yummy (and didn’t really need the swirls of chocolate on top). We were positively surprised and will be back!

So glad this is no longer just a seafood restaurant. The food is just as exceptional as the menu descriptions! We had a sampling of many items, though not necessarily on the ORW special menu and neither of us was disappointed. Tomato salad, pork chops, camarones, squash, even plantain chips were outstanding. Had to take the Tres Leches cake home for breakfast! Will definitely come back and eat outside in the warmer weather, as inside is a little too cozy for lengthy conversations.

We love coming to alaMar. We ordered the fried goat which was dry, with greens, and the guisado which had an incredible sauce but the chicken was overcooked. My favorite meal was the red snapper which my husband and I gobbled up and loved. I have been here before and love this place and will recommend it although we had two dishes we didn't favor. The customer service was great!

Such a fun spot. We tried a lot of dishes I’d never heard of before, everything was great. Cleaned our plates. The music was fun, the vibe was cool. I like how the bartender comes and brings the drinks (which were so good and interesting!) Would definitely go back!

The food is very tasty, if a little uneven. The yuca salad is a little hard to eat and covered in too many pickled onions, but tasty otherwise. The pernil is delicious, but served over a bed of mayonnaise that made the whole thing a little too fatty to eat. And my cocktail was basically just bourbon with a splash of grapefruit juice, so it was difficult to enjoy as a cocktail. But the flavors were on point and the vibe and rest of the menu has lots to offer and I look forward to going back and trying more things. I used to live in uptown Manhattan in a Dominican neighborhood so I kiss that food, and it’s wonderful to have a Dominican spot here in the East Bay!

Absolutely delicious was the consensus from the group! Braised oxtails, wings, roasted chicken, red snapper, tostones, plantains --- EVERYTHING was amazingly delicious. Group of 7 celebrating a birthday, the service was outstanding, the ambience was great. Drinks were on point. Parking a street mostly.

Highly recommend asking the server for recommendations, but I promise you that you cannot go wrong with the half chicken + rice and beans. End your meal with a cafe con leche and you will have had the perfect night.
