First time there. Had 90 minutes before catching David Sedaris over at the Balboa Theater. The service was prompt, friendly, attentive and the whole experience was nice, timed perfectly for or show needs, and we were able to really enjoy the meal and time there. Cocktails, specialty of the night was amazing. The Lamb Ragu was very good as was the fish. Great experience. Would go back.

First experience at Brian Malarkey restaurant and I was not blown away. Beautiful Little Italy space but extremely loud during 630pm dinner reservations. Could barely hear the server tell us about the specials and had to ask her to repeat herself several times. Started the meal with the signature and highly recommended pork belly. Found it over salted and on the dry side. The vandouvan aioli lacked complexity and only really served to give the pork jerky some moisture. I was also disappointed by the apples which did not lend any of the expected sweetness I was looking for. Overall, lackluster one note dish. I had the roasted branzino and this dish was really outstanding. Tender and flaky, the crispiness of the speck (as skin) was very unexpected. I also loved the complexity of the olive and herb tapenade. My dinner companion had the beef cheek tagine with the recommended side of pita. Lovely savory dish. Beef was, again, a bit on the drier side. The yogurt in the middle added a nice creaminess and acidity. What was also interesting was the pillowy pita. I have to say, this was a nice interpretation that I was not use to and was an excellent vehicle to soak up the sauce. My companion and I also shared the cappalletti with braised rabbit, parmesan cream, English peas, and mint. Had a hard time finding the flavor in this dish. Did not taste the rabbit or mint at all. Very one-note dish that I regretted ordering. Service was friendly and attentive. Unfortunately, the loud environment really made any interaction with her or my dinner companion disappointing. Total cost of meal for two including cocktails, bottle of wine and food, approx $300. Would I go back? Probably not.

We were greeted by name and everyone seemed to know it was our anniversary, from the hostess stand to the person walking us to our table to our waiter. Unfortunately, I am allergic to gluten and although the menu didn't have gf marked, the wait staff was well informed and basically all the entrees and veggie dishes were naturally gf and in the case of pizzas, they offered gf crust. Their pastas were the only thing not gf. We had the branzino, trumpet mushrooms, caulilini and butter lettuce salad with the strawberry souffle for dessert. Everything was very good with lots of herbs. A little heavy on the oil and I wish there was a little bit of a citrus element to brighten things up, but still, very good and we would definitely recommend H&W.

Sensational gustatory experience last night. Between the goat cheese and pork belly appetizers and the branzino and gnocchi entrees—-we had a fantastic experience. Will go again for sure. Recommend without hesitation.

Our server Sammy made celebrating our mothers’s 70th birthday wonderfully memorable experience we won’t soon forget. I can’t remember the last time we saw our mother smile so much.

Fantastic, food, ambiance and service. Chef Malarkey paid a visit to our table to say hi and make sure all was well…it certainly was. We have always had great food and good times at Herb & Wood; a great value as well. We will definitely return and recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a memorable and fun dining experience!

The ambience was great. The service and the staff were absolutely amazing. I was a little disappointed with our meal. The food looked beautiful, although everything was over salted and over priced. 😕 it was our 10th anniversary, and the dessert that they brought us actually was really good! I’m not sure that I would go there again.

Herb and wood is my #1 pick in the city. It always has outstanding food and service. It is a little too loud but I know that now so I expect it, it just makes it hard to have a conversation with friends. It is the best food in the city and 5 star service which is equally important to food in my book. I bring all my visitors here!

The server was great. I didn’t like the beef cheek. It was burnt and didn’t have a lot of meat. Portion was small. Wouldn’t recommend it.

We had a selection of dishes and loved them all. Branzino was outstanding. Can be a bit noisy but we were seated on the less noisy side. Definitely recommend and will be back.

I travel to San Diego periodically and have eaten at H&W 4 times in 7 years (3 times since 2021). In a city of great restaurants I keep coming back because I know it’s guaranteed to be amazing. Every single meal here has been perfect from start to finish. This last time was best by far. Venison tar tar was phenomenal, followed by squid ink bucatini with lobster sauce, completed by an amazing strawberry soufflé. Wine list is wonderful. One of my favorite restaurant experiences.

The only reason I deducted a star is that the main course was serviced a bit cooler than our liking. The wagyu was a little tougher than expected. However, the flavors, service and cocktails were excellent.

I loved the place, the environment, the service, and the food was amazing! A great time! I will keep coming back. I loved the two appetizers, the chicken, the pizza with lamb, the three desserts, and drinks, the carajillo was very good.

Exceeded expectations frankly! Have been putting off checking out this spot for years and I'm glad we finally did. Each dish as or more delicious than the last with top notch service. Ask for Zach/Zachary for your server for a great experience! Beef cheek tagine is totally worth the order, as is hamachi, tartare, and their buccatini. Not sure you can go wrong!

Fabulous and great experience. Venison tartare and oysters were standouts for which I’d come back. Miso cod was like butter. Branzino was moist inside and had crispy prosciutto on outside and it came to table whole but deboned and so easy to serve/eat. The only dish we didn’t like was the lamb ragu as lacked flavor and the pasta was chewy and heavy. We did not even take the leftovers. We had no room for dessert but ordered the date cake anyway and it was gone to the last drop of caramel sauce. Love the open air vibe of the restaurant. But it is a cacophony of noise and you can’t talk to the other side of the table or hear the waiter speak easily. For some reason playing rap music! Really not a good choice for the place.

Cool spot, great service, friendly staff, the food was very tasty, but some of the sauces were a bit too much on the sour side. They need to work on the reductions a bit better. But overall, the food was tasty.

Amazing. Way over my expectations. We tried the bone marrow and oysters for starters. It was sooooo good. Then we all ordered something different, so we could try different things. Everything was wonderful. I would definitely recommend going here.

This was a really odd experience. The ambiance is amazing and the drinks were incredible, but after that it all went downhill. Service was basically non-existent as we were in and out of there for dinner in 30 minutes. No idea why it was so rushed. The food was really subpar for a restaurant of this level. We got the Iberico pork and the torchio. It all came out 5 minutes after ordering. Presentation was really poor and the flavors/textures were not there. We’ve been to Herb and Sea multiple times and it’s always a consistently enjoyable experience. We will definitely skip this in the future and stick with Herb and Sea instead. Too bad, really wanted to like this.

Really terrible and inattentive service ruined the meal. Food was just ok.

The service is great but depending on where they place you in the restaurant it can feel a little cramped. The design and feel of the restaurant is nice and the quality of the food is good. Although the food was tasty I did think it was a little pricey for the size. I got the gnocchi as my entree and was still hungry afterwards because there were only a few pieces in the dish. The baba ganoush was great but only came with one piece of pita. Although it is a sharing plate it’s hard to share just a piece of pita. Herb & Wood is known as a Mediterranean restaurant on google but there aren’t too many aspects of Mediterranean cuisine on their menu besides yogurt for dipping and dill here and there.

This place is amazing. Typical for a Malarkey restaurant, it's a bit quirky inside but in a good way. Also typical of a Malarkey restaurant, the food is amazing. Our waiter, not sure of his name because I'm hard of hearing, was very good. If you're in the neighborhood, or just want to stop by, do so. You won't be disappointed.
