Le Café Degas doit son nom à l'impressionniste français du XIXe siècle, Hilaire Germain Edgar Degas, qui en 1872 a visité la Nouvelle-Orléans et y est resté pendant une courte période. Il a vécu au 2306 Esplanade Ave. L'artiste français et restaurateur, Jacques Soulas, est venu à la Nouvelle-Orléans en 1980, avec son ami Jerry Edgar pour construire un restaurant qui rendrait hommage à sa patrie, et où les convives pourraient vivre une expérience de bistro français (avec une touche de la Nouvelle-Orléans) et goûter des bons plats ainsi qu'une carte des vins inspirée. Ils ont choisi l'emplacement actuel en raison de son vieux charme historique, l'attrait artistique et pittoresque de la région, et parce que l'espace disponible était parfait pour l'effet qu'ils souhaitaient créer. Au fil des années, le Café Degas est devenu une référence grâce à la qualité de ses plats et de son service. Il s'emploi à améliorer constamment l'art de séduire les palais avec des plats du jour délicieusement préparés et une sélection de vins.

Specials were a wonderful treat-frog legs and chicken! Favorites never disappoint-French onion soup, salade maison and ravioli. Never skip dessert and always see people you know! Fave place in the city.

Excellent pate plate. Our waiter paired excellent wine selections. I had a daily special (cod on orzo) and my partner enjoyed the steak. The cloud desert was amazing. Lovely experience.

Enjoyed every second of our visit. Great food and great service. We like to sit out on the deck and the weather was perfect that evening. Can’t beat that! We very much appreciate that we got a call to tell us that our favorite waiter, Gustavo, would not be there that evening as he normally is on those days. Actually we had found this out earlier but we still appreciate that they actually called us to let us know this. It was wonderful that they did this and confirms they really care about their patrons. We decided it was such a great evening and the food is always so good that we’d just have to forgo the fun we have with Gustavo that one time. Our assigned waiter was fantastic though.

Great MidCity restaurant tucked into the trees on beautiful Esplanade Avenue! The food is always delish and atmosphere great. The Ravilioles d’Ecrevisse is to die for stuffed with yummy local crawfish and mushrooms. This is one of our all-time favorite spots for brunch or dinner.

The entire experience was outstanding. The server was personable and if she didn't know the answer to a specific question, i.e. about a certain wine, she went and asked. She also let us know ahead of time they were short-staffed, which was helpful to us and to her. We were there to relax and have a good time but it's always good to let people know if there will be a bit of a delay. All the food was outstanding. The cheese board could have fed 6 people easily! We each had a different protein and they were all cooked properly. The neighborhood the restaurant is in is something out of a book. Very charming. I would give it more than 5 stars if I could. Go here.

Maybe it was because it is Jazz Fest week but we had heard that Cafe Degas was a very romantic place to dine, but it certainly wasn’t. Hurried and hectic, loud with classic rock ( don’t get me wrong, I love classic rock but not for a romantic dinner), a distracted waiter, often disappearing, and even asking if we wanted to see the dessert menu after removing our appetizers and then admitting he forgot we hadn’t gotten our entrees yet. The food is good, well designed French which we enjoyed. We will try them again, but not during Jazz Fest.

This has been one of my favorite restaurants for 20+ years. We brought out of town guests this week during Jazz Fest and celebrated a birthday while brunching. I love everything on the menu from light snacking like sharing the cheese or charcuterie boards to full entrees like grits and grillades. Don't skip dessert! Kenzie and all of the staff were amazing!*****

One of my favorite places to eat. It has changed to an informal dining experience we did not care for the music was Loud. The service was great and so was the food. But I do miss the more French feel of long ago. Which made it a special place to dine. dlh.

The four of us visited after Jazz Fest, a very busy time since this restaurant is walking distance from the festival. The menu was a little smaller than usual, but still varied enough to fit a variety of preferences. The service was excellent as were the food and drinks. Ambience was wonderful, as usual, and it’s so much fun to be a part of the post festival activity on Esplanade. Reservations necessary on JazzFest days.

Such sumptuous food! So good you will keep thinking about it the next day. Ravioli lived up to expectation and the watermelon gazpacho was amazing. Excellent salads. Can’t go wrong with anything here

Wait staff very Friendly and efficient. I had the liver dish and it was disappointing. Totally different than the dish used to be. No carmelized onions and veggies not well cooked. Liver was average.

It's been one of our favorites forever and the perfect place to go when I'm missing France in a big way. Last night we were very happy to be able to sit outside on the side porch with perfect weather and ambiance. Kenzie, our server was fantastic, there when we needed her but not hovering. I started with Sebastian's excellent Marvin the Martian cocktail. Hubby had a gin French 75 and friend an Aperol Spritz. To start we shared an order of escargots and fried oysters with celeriac remoulade - yum! Friend and I both had the pan seared sheepshead - hers with lentils and a smoked tomato coulis and mine with couscous, asparagus and a beurre blanc sauce. Hubby had braised short ribs. All excellent along with paired wines. A lovely sancerre for the fish and a red (don't remember what kind) for the spare ribs. A shared Flottante for dessert accompanied by an espresso and cappuccino. A truly wonderful evening. We will be back!
